What people love about Overland Truck Tours from Nairobi to Cape Town
- 58-day Gorillas to Cape Town (Camping)
Liz was a support guide on our trip and was such a joy to have along! Her smiling face and amazing cooking are not soon forgotten.
- Nairobi To Cape Town (76 Days) Grand Adventurer
Three months on and thinking about my time with everyone, with our truck, going around Africa still makes me smile. I didn't know what to expect, and read every blog I could lay my hands on to try and work it out but nothing I read online could prepare me for a trip like this. Because it isn't about itineraries, all the companies are so similar. It's about the ethos of the organisation, the staff they employ and the travellers they attract. Oasis is budget, and so you get the most chilled out people who love every aspect of 'getting your hands dirty' travelling. Which are my kind of people. The truck was awesome - it has such a unique and clever layout, the beach was my favourite bit - riding through Africa with my head out the roof drinking it all in. The crew were phenomenal, they got it all done but had fun and became real, actual friends with the group just like anyone else. I couldn't complain about a single thing in the itinerary, in the running, planning, pre-depature information, support from HQ - it was all top-notch for an amazing price. Lots of people see 'drive days' as a total drag on a trip like this but actually I loved them, the truck is laid out so you can chat to each other, have a dance party or just stick your head out of the sides/top for hours, and it's looking out the window that you see the real Africa. So I guess that's the most special thing about Oasis (though it is really hard to pick), that with them you really can get the most out of every day, not just the ones in somewhere already amazing like the Serengeti, Victoria Falls or the Gorilla Treks. I miss it so much, my only complaint is that it's over!
- The Southern Safari
What an incredible trip! Highly recommend the Southern Safari to everyone! Extremely good value for money, and also had amazing drivers and tour leader! Especially JB and Philippa! Both of them were always helpful and positive despite the stress that comes with organising a large group! I can recommed this trip to people of all ages being 17 myself and the oldest on our tour was in their 40's. Everyone got along well and enjoyed themselves! Absolute Africa is a great company!
What our customers ask about Overland Truck Tours from Nairobi to Cape Town
Which major national parks and wildlife areas are visited on Nairobi to Cape Town tours?
You'll explore some of Africa's most spectacular wildlife areas as you travel south. The journey takes you through the Masai Mara, Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, South Luangwa National Park, Chobe National Park, and Etosha National Park. One traveler told us: "We caught the end of the migration in Kenya and as we traveled south through Africa, we saw the Big Five in copious numbers across multiple parks." You'll spend 2-3 days in the major parks like the Serengeti, where you'll stay at bush camps such as Seronera Campsite. It's quite an experience - you can hear the wildlife right outside your tent at night.
What type of accommodation can I expect on a Nairobi to Cape Town tour?
You'll mostly be camping, with a few nights in hotels and lodges to mix things up. Most tours include 34-46 nights in two-person dome tents, plus 3-4 nights in hotels or lodges in places like Stone Town in Zanzibar and Swakopmund. One recent traveler shared: "The tents were surprisingly very comfortable with plenty of space and good sleeping pads. Most campsites had showers and about 50% had hot water, while some premium stays included properties like Utengule Coffee Lodge in Tanzania's Mbeya region."
How much spending money should I budget for optional activities?
For a tour lasting 43-77 days, plan to bring around $2,000-3,000 extra for activities not included in your tour price. Some popular add-ons are a balloon ride over the Masai Mara ($410), bungee jumping at Victoria Falls ($160), white water rafting ($120), and flying over the Okavango Delta ($625 per plane). A good tip from a past traveler: "Plan to spend more than you think. When everyone is going on an extra safari or activity, you'll want to join in too - it's different making those decisions when you're actually there."
What are the typical group sizes and demographics on these tours?
You'll be traveling with about 20-25 people, mostly between ages 18-39, from various countries. About 75% of people come solo, while the rest are usually couples. As one traveler explained: "Our group was on the larger side during peak season July-October with about 20-25 people. The amount varies as there are smaller sections where people join for different legs of the trip, like some starting in Zanzibar or Victoria Falls."
