  • Day 1

    Arrive in Valverde

    Fly into El Hierro's small airport and head to Valverde, the island's capital at 1,000m elevation. Take a short walk around town to get your bearings. The cool mountain air and Atlantic views offer a perfect introduction to the island. Pack layers since temperatures can change quite a bit between the plateau and coast.

    
  • Day 2

    Valverde to Mocanal (11km)

    Begin your hike across the volcanic plateau through pastoral landscapes where shepherds still tend their flocks. Stop at the Arbol Santo (Sacred Tree), a historic fountain-tree that was once a vital water source for locals. The terrain isn't difficult but offers little shade. Start early to avoid strong afternoon sun.

    
  • Day 3

    Mocanal to La Frontera (17km)

    One of the most impressive sections takes you along El Golfo's massive escarpment. The path from Mirador de Jinama to La Frontera drops over 1,000m but has good handrails. Bring hiking poles for the descent and plenty of water since the cliff face gets hot.

    
  • Day 4

    Sabinosa Circuit (15km)

    Visit the westernmost village in "old world" Europe for a challenging loop walk. You'll see the famous twisted juniper trees at El Sabinar, shaped by constant trade winds. Visit between 4-6pm to watch local farmers milk their sheep the traditional way.

    
  • Days 5-6

    La Frontera to El Pinar via Malpaso

    Climb to the island's highest point at Malpaso (1,501m) before walking down through native Canarian pine forests to El Pinar. The next day, follow an old shepherd's path to La Restinga, the southernmost village. Stop for lunch here to try excellent fresh seafood at prices lower than other Canary Islands.

    
  • Day 7

    El Pinar to Las Playas (12km)

    Your final hiking day offers stunning eastern coastal views as you descend over 1,000m to Las Playas. The path can get slippery after rain so good hiking boots are important. End your day with a swim at the hotel pool or black sand beach.

    Departure to Tenerife

    Take an early transfer to catch your flight to Tenerife. Try to book afternoon flights to avoid a rushed morning.

  • Days 1-3

    Tenerife

    Base yourself in San Miguel de Abona to explore Tenerife. Spend your first afternoon at El Medano beach. The locals know best - go after 4 PM when the strong Trade winds usually settle down. On Day 2 visit Las Cañadas del Teide National Park and take the cable car up to 3,500 meters. Book the 9 AM ride to avoid crowds and the afternoon cloud cover that often blocks the views. Your Day 3 adventure is the Barranco del Infierno hike. You need permits at least 2 weeks in advance and good hiking boots for this one. The 6.2 km trail is steep but ends at a stunning 200-meter waterfall.

    
  • Days 4-6

    La Gomera

    Take the morning ferry from Los Cristianos to San Sebastián de La Gomera. It's a 50-minute ride. The ancient laurel forest in Garajonay National Park looks like something from prehistoric times. Pack a light rain jacket since the high altitude creates misty conditions. Get to the Abrante Viewpoint's glass floor platform early before the tour buses show up around 11 AM. The views of Tenerife are incredible. The 6 km Las Hayas trail goes through what locals call 'the green heart of La Gomera.' Bring layers as the temperatures can change quickly.

    
  • Days 7-10

    La Palma

    One traveler said it best: 'Watching the sunrise from Roque de Los Muchachos was otherworldly—the sea of clouds below made us feel like we were on top of the world.' Take the early ferry from La Gomera to reach Santa Cruz de La Palma by 10:30 AM. The Caldera de Taburiente National Park has some narrow trails with steep drops so watch your step on the crater rim hike. The Volcanoes Route on Day 9 shows you old eruption sites and areas affected by the 2021 eruption. Walking poles will help with the 650-meter descent to Fuencaliente lighthouse.
