We booked a self-guided tour in Tenerife, splitting our stay between the north for 3 nights and the south for 4 nights. In the north, we enjoyed a scenic hike and visited Loro Parque, ending one evening with a private dinner at Bernoulli's Steak House. Our 4* hotel had a beautiful beach view. The experience at H10 Atlantic Hotel in South Tenerife was fantastic, especially the quad ride and sunset at Mt. Teide. We also explored a mall and relaxed at the beaches. Driving around Tenerife was easy, making it a great destination for tourists who prefer to self-drive. Overall, our Tenerife trip was memorable and fun.

Best time to visit Canary Islands
- Winter 2025 / 2026
Winter really brings out the best in our Canary Islands walking tours, particularly on La Gomera and Lanzarote from December through February. The mild temperatures make longer walks quite enjoyable - our travelers tell us they love mixing the misty trails in Garajonay National Park with stops in San Sebastian's old quarters. The combined islands walking tour gets excellent feedback, especially for its contrast between volcanic landscapes and dense forests. Over in Lanzarote, winter walkers particularly enjoy the Famara Cliffs paths, often mentioning the perfect photography conditions. Our sailing tours do well in winter too - you'll need to be ready for some choppy seas as customers note, but those clear winter skies make for fantastic stargazing from quiet anchorages.

- Spring 2026
Spring is when our self-drive tours really shine, especially around Tenerife from March to May with ideal conditions for exploring both coastlines. Our travelers appreciate having flexibility to time their visits to popular spots like Las Cañadas, and spring decorates many hiking trails with wildflowers. La Gomera's walking tours consistently get good feedback in spring - the paths are quieter and weather's perfect for extended hikes. Many customers point out how much they enjoy moving through different landscapes, from misty forests to coastal tracks and also rocky paths. Lanzarote's self-guided cycling tours peak in spring too, with riders loving the moderate temperatures for routes through La Geria's distinctive wine country.

- Summer 2026
Summer draws people to our northern routes, where Tenerife's Anaga Rural Park offers shaded walks and cooler temperatures. These ancient trails date to the Tertiary period, and our travelers particularly enjoy exploring the old laurel forests. Summer sailing tours are popular too - you can jump in for refreshing swims right from the boat in La Gomera's quiet bays. Our customers often mention how they like combining easy coastal walks with relaxed sailing between islands, though some routes include longer days at sea worth preparing for.

- Fall / Autumn 2026
Autumn creates perfect conditions for our more demanding walking tours, with routes on La Gomera, Tenerife and also Mount Teide getting particularly strong feedback. Our travelers often mention loving the clear autumn skies for photography, especially along the Famara Cliffs. Multi-island walking tours work exceptionally well this season - you'll find peaceful trails and pleasant temperatures for longer hikes. The self-guided cycling tours receive great autumn reviews too, with customers appreciating the quiet time to explore La Geria's vineyards and coastal paths without summer crowds. Tour company feedback from our travelers suggests La Gomera and Tenerife are real standouts for walking holidays with Explore. Their routes take you through pine forests, along coastal paths and into quiet villages that most visitors never see. The walks can be quite demanding though - some of our guests mention needing good fitness levels, proper boots and walking poles for the steeper sections. Over in Gran Canaria, Eat Sleep Cycle has found a sweet spot combining challenging rides with comfort. Their base at the Spa Hotel lets you tackle those mountain climbs and then properly recover afterwards. The routes are cleverly designed so you can adjust the distance and difficulty each day. Macs Adventure gives cyclists more independence in Lanzarote - their self-guided tours mean you can stop whenever you spot something interesting. Our travelers particularly like being able to explore at their own pace, knowing they've got quality hotels booked ahead and detailed route notes to follow. They provide good bikes, move your luggage between hotels and pick routes that show off the volcanic landscapes and quiet coastal roads. Each company brings something different - Explore for guided walks in the western islands, Eat Sleep Cycle for supported riding from a comfortable base and Macs Adventure for independent cycling with all the logistics taken care of.

Which Canary Island should I pick for my first visit?
You know, each island's got its own special charm. Tenerife's the big one and it's pretty amazing - you've got Mount Teide with all its volcanic scenery on one side and beautiful beaches like Playa de Las Americas on the other. If you're after a mix of city buzz and beach time Gran Canaria's perfect with Las Palmas city life and those stunning inland valleys. Now Lanzarote that's really something different with its volcanic landscapes and you've got to see those art centers Cesar Manrique designed. If you're into dramatic scenery and art Lanzarote's fantastic - there's this great self-guided cycling tour called "Lanzarote Land of Volcanoes" that takes you through Timanfaya National Park and those unique vineyards in La Geria. Beach lovers you can't really go wrong with Tenerife or Gran Canaria and tours like the "Gran Canaria & Fuerteventura Roadtrip" let you explore everything from Las Canteras beach to those amazing Maspalomas dunes.
How long do I need to really see the Canary Islands?
For just one island you'll want at least 5 days to see the highlights properly. If you're looking to take it slower or explore more areas 7 days works better - like the "Highlights of El Hierro Walk" which needs a full week to really experience those volcanic landscapes and coastal paths. Planning to island hop? Give yourself at least 3 days per island and don't forget about travel time between them. There's this great 10-day tour called "Undiscovered towns & trails" that covers Tenerife La Gomera and La Palma spending about 3 days on each which works out perfectly.
