The route takes you through some of Scotland's most iconic scenery, and then you'll board a scenic ferry to the Isle of Skye. By late afternoon you'll arrive in Portree, the main town on the island, where you have free time to walk around the colourful harbour and grab dinner at a local restaurant.

Throughout the day your guide will share stories about Bonnie Prince Charlie and the island's history, all while you're surrounded by the jagged Cuillin Mountains. After that, the Dundreggan Rewilding Centre shows you efforts to restore native forests in the Highlands. A great way to see the highlands and Skye. Our driver Dave had a vast knowledge of the history of the area and this was delivered with a great sense of humour.

The organisation was good and Paul the driver/guide was very professional, arranging yet making sure we respected timings, etc. The overall itinerary was good. However the Dunvegan Castle on the 2nd day and the train ride on the 3rd day should we included in the tour by default. There is nothing else to do otherwise on the afternoon of the 2nd day, and it means the third day has no real highlights and we do a lot of driving just to get people there and back. We wanted to do the train (it was one of the main motivation to pick this particular tour) but unfortunately I hadn't understood the need to book it at the same time as the tour, and to this day still don't understand how I would have done that on TourRadar. I messaged when I realised just to be told it was booked out, So it was a mixed experience really. Scotland delivered at least.

The trip was excellent. Our tour guide, Graeme, did a wonderful job, regaling us on all things Scottish, was so considerate, and very helpful. He recommended restaurants and other places to buy food, and made extra stops when requested. For our tour of Skye, the weather cooperated, even in the middle of winter, making the trip truly the best Scotland has to offer.

Our tour to the Highlands and the Isle of Skye was excellent. Our guide Paul, with Highland Explorers, was very pleasant and informative and considerate of the needs of his passengers. Our room at The Skye Inn was very nice and the breakfast provided also great. The frequent stops for sightseeing and the train ride were enjoyable. Our favorite stop was Dunveggan Castle.

    • Highland Explorer ToursOperatorWritten September 2025

If you take the steam train option you will be driven to Fort William and then ride the train to Mallaig where the driver will pick you up and then continue the tour. If you do not take the train you will ride the bus between the locations, likely with another stop on the way. If there is coach space it is often to the Glenfinnan Viaduct.

Surely 2 people can fit in accommodation that can sleep 3 or 4 people? It is normally the one price for a room.

We would not be able to accommodate a family room for 3/4 for 2 people only.
