Pinhão to Vila Nova de Foz Côa
Start cycling from Pinhão toward Ervedosa do Douro and São João da Pesqueira. You'll stop at a wine museum during the ride, then continue to Vila Nova de Foz Côa, which sits beside World Heritage Paleolithic paintings carved into the rock faces.

Vila Nova de Foz Côa to Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo
Ride toward Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, passing through Castelo Melhor, Algodres, and Vilar de Amargo along the way. The medieval village itself has a castle perched at a high point overlooking the terrain. If you're cycling between February and March, you'll see almond blossoms throughout the countryside.

Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo to Marialva
Continue through the heart of the Douro by cycling along the Côa River course toward Pinhel, then finish in Marialva. This town has connections to Portuguese nobility and carries echoes of 18th-century equestrian traditions in its architecture and layout.

Marialva to Trancoso
This stage includes challenging hills as you cycle past Maia and Ranhados, the highest points of the day. You'll ride through distinctive mountain-carved landscapes with old vineyards terraced into the slopes. If you take the longer route option, you can visit Trancoso, a medieval town where narrow stone streets and old houses reflect centuries of Portuguese history.

Penedono
Take a free day in Penedono, or cycle a loop through the surrounding area if you prefer staying active. The route goes through traditional farmlands covered in vineyards and chestnut trees. The Sernancelhe area is known for chestnuts, and you can follow the Tavóra River through mountains and valleys. There's also an option to visit a 12th-century church in the region.
