Although I'm rating it 5 stars this trip isn't perfect. Things I didn't like: about 30% of the trip you spend on the road and at times it's just dreadful, especially when you got food poisoning from eating things from the local market the day before and have to be on the bus for the next 13 hours. So be prepared for that. Also few hotels were just meh. Things I liked: both Mexico and Guatemala are magical (nature, food, people, architecture etc.) Highly recommend to take all the optional activities G offers, except maybe a cooking class and salsa dancing, unless you are really into it (in my opinion not worth the money paid.) Also, I had a first class guide (@G they are called Chief Experience Officers) Kevin, who is just a wonderful human. It felt at times that I wasn't on the tour, but we all visited our old buddy who just showed us around town.

This was an extremely interesting and rewarding experience. My knowledge of Mayan civilisation has been expanded, and the homestay was humbling.

This was my first trip with G Adventures and I wasn't sure what to expect. Everything went well and the CEO was very professional and knowledgable. I would have been happier if the tour had taken a deeper dive into Mayan culture.

We loved this tour. Our Gadventures CEO Christiane was fantastic, the sights were awesome, plenty of optional extras to choose from, hotels were good and heaps of good food options. Only things we would want to change was to have one more day in Palenque as we felt a bit rushed trying to squeeze everything into one day and would have liked to see the town while we were there or had time to relax in the pool at the hotel. In a couple of hotels the water pressure was low and it took forever for the hot water to warm up but I guess you have to expect that in Mexico & Guatemala.

Because the guide explains the culture, food and political history and brings the country to life. You are less of a voyeur from afar and more of an interested and attuned visited.

Great mix of Mayan history and sites with opportunity to take in the sites and relax. Don't feel pressured to to specific things if you do not want to, so there's flexibility and our guide was knowledgeable and welcoming. If you're often finding yourself with the prospect of travelling on your own but uncertain about what to do, this trip really took the stress away from that.

Depending on who asks, I'd have to warn them about how active the tour is. It's not just bussing up to tourist sites to take pictures and it's way more immersive than staying at a resort.

    Gail

    Asked on June 27th, 2024

is it possible to join this tour half way from Planeque or San Cristobal?

    Tour Details
    • G AdventuresOperatorWritten June 2024

Yes, it is definitely possible to join the tour part way through, however there would be no discount or reduction in price as it would be seen as a forfeit of the services. You would also be responsible for meeting up with the group on your own and at your own expense.

    • G

      Gail

      TravelerWritten June 2024

is it possible to get a single supplement at least? I'm skipping almost 50% of the tour :)

    • G AdventuresOperatorWritten June 2024

This departure date of July 7 is showing the single supplements as sold out, this is something we'd need to request with our local office once you proceed with a booking.

    Asked on November 23rd, 2023

If I book the Mayan trail tour do I have to do the home stay? Can I stay in a hotel in Panajachel and wait until the next day and meet up with the tour group to go to Antigua.

    Accommodation
    Tour Details
    • G AdventuresOperatorWritten November 2023

It is possible for you to book your own accommodation for that night and stay in a separate hotel, but it would be up to you to rejoin the group the next morning and at your extra expense. The homestay will be in the community of San Juan La Laguna, so you would also need to stay here.

      TravelerWritten November 2023

Is the group coming back off the boat from the same place they leave from? Where is it we would need to meet the group?

    • G AdventuresOperatorWritten November 2023

If you wanted to leave the group for a night this is something we would request when you were holding a space (before booking you can hold a space for 48hrs) to check on logistics.

    Jonathan

    Asked on November 22nd, 2023

I am a solo female traveler, so my question and concern is about food. Where can I eat? I don't like going alone in restaurants, or just wasting travel time looking for breakfast, lunch, dinner.

    Meals
    Travel Support
    • G AdventuresOperatorWritten November 2023

Generally meals are not included in the trip price when there is a choice of eating options, to give you the maximum flexibility in deciding where, what and with whom to eat. Our groups tend to eat together to enable you to taste a larger variety of dishes and enjoy each other's company. There is no obligation to do this though. Your CEO will be able to suggest favourite restaurants during your trip.
