Highlights

  • Soak up the cosmopolitan vibes of Buenos Aires and explore the highlights on foot – including the Avenida de Mayo and the San Telmo area filled with markets and murals.
  • Get to know the gaucho (cowboy) way of life at a traditional estancia (ranch) in Uruguay. Explore the land on horseback, help your hosts make empanadas and feast on a classic asado (barbecue).
  • Explore the Historic Quarter of Colonia del Sacramento, one of Uruguay’s oldest cities and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Stroll cobbled streets lined with vintage cars and rub shoulders with locals sipping yerba mate.
  • See the mighty Iguazu Falls – the world’s largest waterfall system which straddles the border between Argentina and Brazil – from different vantage points in both countries.
  • End your trip in Brazil’s famous beachside city: Rio de Janeiro. Make the most of your local leader’s recommendations – how about finding a local samba bar or wandering the bohemian streets of Santa Teresa?

LORENZO!: The Man. The Guide. THE LEGEND! Great guide, though he didn’t have to do much on this trip b/c the itinerary is pretty sparse (not guides fault). Be warned, the only real planned activities on this sparse itinerary are at Iguazu Falls & at the ranch in Uruguay. Don’t be fooled by the Buenos Aires & Rio de Janeiro on the itinerary, these are merely entrance and exit spots for their airports. There are no appreciable planned activities, tours or sightseeing. If you want to see these two major cities, and all they have to offer, you will definitely need to plan extra time on either end of your trip and do it on your own. Although there can be some benefit to a free and open unplanned itinerary, I found it very inefficient as the majority party (same Country members of your group) decides what you do, and I would’ve spent my time very differently if I had the choice. Also, there are nowhere near the number of included breakfast in the itinerary, as most days you are leaving before breakfast is provided, I think maybe we got three or four breakfasts. Overall, hit some high spots if you include time on either end on your own, but not a packed and planned itinerary like other intrepid tours I have been on.

Amazing adventure! I enjoyed the stay at the estancia and was blown away by Iguaçu falls. Our leader Gus is a well organized person. He has the ability to make you feel welcome and at ease right away. He is very encouraging and patient, sometimes answering the same question 8 times in the same hour.

Well constructed itinerary and expectations managed.Rod did an outstanding job of accomodating our individual needs (optional activities). His enthusiasm was infectious and erased any apprehension. He was frank about current events and history of the various countries we hit which lent us a more authentic look (vs. a rose colored lens perspective).
