Reykjavík
You'll arrive in Reykjavik and check into your centrally located hotel. If your flight gets in early enough, there's a guided city tour available with a Viking guide who can walk you through the highlights and show you some of the less obvious spots around town.

- Day 2
Reykjavík to Borgarnes
Head out toward Borgarnes but take the long way around the Golden Circle route. You'll stop at Thingvellir National Park, see the geyser in action, and walk around Gullfoss waterfall. These are some of Iceland's most well-known natural sites, and the drive itself shows off the landscape nicely.

Borgarnes to Akureyri
The drive continues to Akureyri with a stop at Glanni waterfall on the way, a place locals say elves and trolls call home. After that, you'll check out the Glaumbær Museum, which sits in historic turf-roofed houses that give a real sense of how Icelanders used to live.

- Day 4
Akureyri
You'll have the day to yourself in Akureyri, North Iceland's main town. Walk around the town center, check out the museums and galleries at your own pace. If you want to get out on the water, a whale watching tour in Eyjafjordur can get you humpback whales, minke whales, dolphins, and porpoises.

Landmarks Akureyri - Day 5
Akureyri to Mývatn
Drive to Myvatn, a lake surrounded by active volcanic activity that creates a unique landscape. Soak in the Myvatn Nature Baths, walk around the volcanic craters, and see the strange rock formations. Stop by either Godafoss or Dettifoss waterfall on the way, depending on which route feels right.

Mývatn to Egilsstaðir
Head east and stop at Dimmuborgir's lava formations, which look straight out of a fairy tale with all the twisted rock shapes. If time allows, take a detour to Studlagil Gorge to see black basalt columns rising up next to bright blue-green water. Later you'll roll into Egilsstadir, the largest town in East Iceland.

Egilsstaðir to Höfn
Drive south through East Iceland toward Hofn in Hornafjordur. Stop at Litlanesfoss to see its basalt columns stacked like giant stones, then visit Seydisfjordur, a small town with colorful wooden houses dating back to the 1800s that give it character.

Höfn - Jökulsárlón
You'll reach Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, where bright blue icebergs float on the water at the edge of Vatnajokull National Park. A boat trip on the lagoon lets you get right up close to the ice. Nearby in Skaftafell, there's a guided glacier hike available on Falljokull glacier if you want something more active.

- Day 9
Höfn to Reykjavík
Head back toward Reykjavik along the south coast with stops at Reynisfjara, a black sand beach with dramatic rock formations. You'll also see Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls on the route. A short horseback riding tour on one of the local farms lets you experience Iceland's famous horses firsthand.

Reykjavík to Departure
You'll head to the airport according to your flight time. If you have a later departure, stop at the Blue Lagoon for one last soak in the geothermal water before driving to Keflavik Airport.
