- Day 1
Thessaloniki or Kavala to Kavala
You'll arrive at either Thessaloniki or Kavala Airport and head to Kavala city center. If you booked the Thessaloniki-Kavala leg, you can spend the rest of the day exploring Kavala on your own, getting oriented and settling into the area.

- Day 2
Kavala to Nea Karvali
You have flexibility today. Either walk through Kavala's historic streets to see sites spanning from 7th century BC through the Ottoman period, or take a taxi to Nea Karvali for hiking (your luggage gets transported separately). In Nea Karvali, check out the ancient settlement of Akondisma or relax on the beach instead.

Nea Karvali to Chrysoupoli to Nea Karvali
Head out on foot along irrigation canals from Nea Karvali, passing the fenced archaeological site of Pistyros and the Byzantine fortress of Petropighi. The route continues east through fields to Chrysoupoli. You'll return to Nea Karvali by public bus in the late afternoon.

Chrysoupoli to Toxotes
A taxi takes you from Chrysoupoli to start a scenic hike to Toxotes. The route follows the western bank of the Nestos River or winds through agricultural land with varied crops. If interested, detour to see the ancient Topeiros ruins before ending in the traditional mountain village of Toxotes.

Toxotes to Xanthi
Leave Toxotes and move into Thrace's region, passing through several Muslim villages with a different character. The trail goes through agricultural areas where you'll likely meet local farmers. After reaching the lively village of Genisea, a taxi takes you to Xanthi, where the historic old town sits on hillsides with charming streets.

Xanthi to Genisea to Koptero or Iasmos
A public bus returns you to Genisea for a long hike following the Kosynthos River eastward past bridges at Polysitos. You'll see ecological restoration work and the open-air archaeological site of Anastasioupolis, a Roman port from the Via Egnatia. Finish in Koptero or continue 7 kilometers to Iasmos, then catch a bus back to Xanthi.

A taxi takes you and your luggage to Iasmos. The hike goes through lush forests to the Byzantine bridge at Polyanthos, a quiet spot with nearby Roman bridge remains from the Via Egnatia. Pass excavations at Maximianoupolis with ancient basilica and city ruins before ending in Komotini, a vibrant culturally diverse city.

Komotini to Mesti to Makri
Walk through quiet, flat terrain along the fertile Lissos River, which has rich birdlife. Cross the river and follow disused railway tracks, then cross the modern Egnatia Highway to reach Mesti village. From there, catch the bus to Makri near the coast. Alternatively, visit the Archaeological Museum of Komotini or the ancient site of Mesimbria/Zoni from Makri.

Makri to Ancient Zoni to Makri
The bus takes you from Makri back near Mesti to continue yesterday's route. You'll reach the longest preserved sections of the Via Egnatia in Greece with sea views from the top. Forest fires affected this area in 2023, but nature's recovering. Consider detouring west to Ancient Zoni (7th century BC), then walk the coast back to Makri.

Your tour ends after breakfast. An extra night in Alexandroupoli is worth considering to visit the archaeological museum, which focuses on research about the Via Egnatia and the region's history.
