Madeira - Machico to Porto da Cruz Hike

This morning you're tackling your first hike on a narrow coastal path that runs between Machico and Porto da Cruz. You'll walk along the levada past terraced fields, making your way up to the dramatic Boca do Risco viewpoint where clifftop views stretch out over the Atlantic. After that, you'll explore Porto da Cruz where you can check out a historic sugar cane factory or take a swim in the natural sea pool if you're interested.

  3. Day 3

    Madeira - Laurisilva Forest Hike

Starting from an abandoned mountain village, you'll head into the Laurisilva, which is Madeira's UNESCO World Heritage laurel forest. Most of your hike follows the historic Levada dos Tornos, one of the island's oldest waterways that carries water from the north down to the south. You'll be walking through lush vegetation with peaceful surroundings the whole way, so it's a nice contrast from some of the other trails.

Madeira - Pico Arieiro to Pico Ruivo High Mountain Hike

A bus takes you up to Pico Arieiro at 1800 meters, and from there you're looking out at views above the clouds. You'll hike the high-altitude trail that connects Pico Arieiro to Pico Ruivo, which is Madeira's highest mountain. The sweeping island vistas and dramatic mountain landscapes rising from the sea of clouds make this one feel pretty different from the lower elevation trails.

Along the way you'll come across ancient stink laurel trees that have been here since the island was discovered, like something from a fairytale. The hike finishes at Porto Moniz, which is known for its dramatic lava rock formations that create a natural swimming pool you can actually use.
