Capileira
You'll arrive in Capileira, a whitewashed village sitting at 1,436 m (4,711 ft) in the Alpujarras region. The steep narrow streets wind through the settlement, opening into tiny squares with fountains scattered throughout. The Moorish heritage is visible everywhere you look, shaping how the village flows across the hillside. Spend your time walking around, getting a feel for the layout and the local architecture.

Bubion - Pampaneira
This morning you'll start a circular hike through the Río Poqueira valley. The route goes from Capileira through Bubion and down to Pampaneira, covering old farmhouse remnants and ancient threshing circles along the way. The Sierra Nevada peaks stay visible throughout the walk. By afternoon, you'll reach Pampaneira where the colorful craft stores and cafés offer a good spot to grab lunch and rest before heading back.

Poqueira Valley to Lower Alpujarras
You'll hike along old paths that connect the Poqueira Valley down to the lower Alpujarras, moving between whitewashed villages as you go. The landscape changes noticeably from Mediterranean holm oak forest into pine plantations and then irrigated fields. Later you'll reach the Taha de Pitres, an ancient Moorish water council seat. The terrain shift shows how the valley transforms from higher elevations to lower agricultural zones.

Trevélez Gorge
You're heading south to the Trevélez river gorge, which opens into dramatic rock formations and steep canyon walls. A medieval bridge crosses the gorge and leads you upward to a wooded plateau where the remote Cortijo de Panjulia sits isolated. From there, you'll descend using an old main path (escarihuelas) back through the gorge. The final stretch takes you through Ferreirola village and back to your hotel.

Trevélez Valley and Mozarabic Settlement
You'll hike through the Trevélez river valley on paths that move through holm oak forests, reforestation areas, fields, and pastureland toward fantastic viewpoints. There's a Mozarabic settlement to see with an 8th-11th century mosque that shows the region's history. If the longer route feels too strenuous, a shorter alternative hike through the Taha villages works just as well for seeing the landscape.

Multiple Hike Options
Starting from Trevélez, you have options for the day. There's a longer spectacular route heading into the Sierra Nevada, a circular walk around Trevélez itself, or a shorter hike along the Camino de Granada, which is the historic pilgrim path to Santiago de Compostela. Pick whichever suits your energy level and interests best.

Trevélez to El Portichuelo
You'll leave Trevélez on a pleasant trail moving through shady forest on narrow paths. As you climb higher, the forest opens and views become more sweeping. On clear days from the highest point at El Portichuelo, you can actually see across to the African continent, which is a rare and memorable sight from this elevation.

Landmarks El Portichuelo - Day 8
Béchules to Granada
Early in the morning, you'll hike along the Río Grande valley north of Béchules, then follow an irrigation canal (acequia) and check out the ruins of a 13th-century Moorish silk wash house. After lunch, you'll head to the bus station for your departure to Granada at 17:01 (current as of September 2024), ending your time in the Alpujarras.
