Our group leader, Maurizio was excellent. He was able to accommodate most of the wishes of our group by giving options whereby people could still have personal choices. He had a wonderful sense of humour, yet was able to deal with personal problems of members with compassion.

Micol was the best! Hope all other Intrepid tour leaders are like Micol. My wife and I enjoyed the tour so much. It was “The Best of Italy” indeed. We have learned so much of Italy so far. Micol was excellent in managing the tour. Micol was very informative and knowledgeable and has answered for every question we asked. It was hectic and very challenging at our age level but Micol was very accommodating and made things manageable. It saved us the hassle in coordinating the accommodation and transportation. Micol organized the option of getting together on lunches, dinners or tapas. It made the group more familiar of each other and comfortable.

Congratulations to our tour leader Micole who managed to help us with trains directions, booking museums and taking us out to nice restaurants. If you book a tour with this company you will be so lucky to have her. Accomodations : I was not satisified with the hotels provided during this trip even if most of them are labeled as 3 stars, the rooms were quite small and the beds also even as a european standards. Hotel in Rome was nice but the inside of the room looked as if the paintjob and AC installation was not quite finished (inside of the vents still visible, paintjob on the walls looked it has been finished in a quick way). The neigbourhood around Rome Termini was quite dirty and we had to be careful in the evening for drunk people. Florence : hotel was very close to train station which was good. I did not like the fact that there was no common room to have breakfast with the other guests. Lucca : this was the best hotel of the trip, the manager was very nice, breakfast was wonderful. La Spezia : it was the worst hotel ever, all the guests had to be on different floors and up to 5 flight of stairs without an elevator with a suitcase is not acceptable for the price we paid. The hotel was located way too close to the station, we could hear the train until late at night. Even if it was written in the contract that the people who paid for a single supplement would have to share a room in La Spezia, I think Intrepid should manage to book a hotel where all the guests can have their single room. Worst part of this hotel, a couple in our group had to walk 10 minutes away from the hotel because the first hotel was full...... Neither the hotel manager and the tour leader were informed of this situation beforehand. Asti : it was a good surprise for a 2 star hotel even if we expected to be in a 3 star hotel as the rest of the trip. I have nothing to add regarding this hotel. Maybe something closer to the bars and restaurants would be nice. Lake Como : hotel was not good. The rooms were almost on the main road itself, we could hear the motocycles and the cars passing in front of our window passing all night. Very hard to sleep properly. I would recommend getting another hotel away from the main road. Venice : location of the hotel was very central, quite good. The bathroom was ridiculous, as small as a camping bathroom, everytime we took a shower the whole bathroom floor would get wet. Room looked quite outdated with that red wallpaper and many dead mosquitoes smashed on the wall. I would not recommed this hotel. Transportation : most of the trains we took were on time and efficient. The only thing that needs to be improved is to provide a direct train from Milan to Venice and not having to take 2 regional trains and run through the station to catch the second train.

The tour itself was a bit ambitious - not enough time in many places (Rome and Florence for example). On the other hand, I did get to see towns/ cities I would not otherwise have seen. The pace was good. The introductory walks in each new destination were excellent. The accommodation was much better than I expected! One suggestion: forget la Spezia. Try to organize accommodation in one of the cinque terre villages or Portovenere. There was really nothing in la Spezia, and it’s only used as a gateway to cinque terre. It’s a bit of a yawn! Yuri was a terrific tour leader. He was engaging and enthusiastic. There were lots of physical activities but no pressure to join in if someone wanted to do something else. Yuri’s knowledge of each place we went was so welcomed. He was fun, understanding, helpful. He went out of his way to assist me when I encountered a couple of unexpected difficulties. I couldn’t have asked for a better tour leader.
