- Day 1
Nale Moru
You'll drive to the wooden village of Nale Moru, stopping first at Marangu to sort out permits before the hike begins. The trail starts through maize fields and pine forest, climbing gradually as you move through the trees where you might spot some wildlife. By day's end, you'll reach the first camp right at the moorland edge with views stretching out over the Kenyan plains below.

Second Cave
Today brings a steady climb toward the Second Cave, and the views get better as you go. You'll hike through moorland while gaining elevation, with Kibo coming into view along with the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim. It's a solid day of hiking that continues building your fitness for what's ahead.

Landmarks Kibo - Day 3
Third Cave
You'll trek from the Second Cave to the Third Cave through semi-desert terrain, covering less ground than previous days but continuing to push your elevation higher. This shorter hiking day gives your body more time to adjust to the altitude before the push toward the crater.

- Day 4
Kibo Hut
The hike takes you to Kibo Hut, positioned at the base of the Kibo crater wall. After arriving, you'll spend the rest of the day resting and preparing mentally for the summit attempt. Get sleep if you can, eat well, and stay hydrated because the early morning starts in just a few hours.

- Day 5
Uhuru Peak
You'll wake between midnight and 2am to start the summit push. The climb to Gilman's Point on the crater rim follows steep scree or snow, then you continue to Uhuru Peak at 5895m, Africa's highest point. After photos and celebration, you'll descend back to Kibo for lunch, then continue down to Horombo encampment. Bring a headlamp for the dark ascent and prepare for extreme cold and switchbacks that demand focus.

Moshi
You'll make a steady descent through moorland to Mandara Hut, then keep going down through lush forest toward the National Park gate at Marangu. The lower elevations can turn wet and muddy, so watch your footing. Your vehicle meets you at the gate for the roughly one hour drive back to your hotel in Moshi.
