Rome
You'll land at Rome airport and grab your rental car for the trip. After getting settled in your accommodation and stashing the heavier bags, head out to explore Rome on your own terms. Take time to walk through the city's key landmarks and wander the historic streets at whatever pace feels right.

Bomarzo - Viterbo
Drive out to Calcata Vecchia, a hilltop town with a lively artist community and plenty of street cats hanging around. Next stop is Sacro Bosco in Bomarzo, a 16th-century sculpture park filled with strange statues and hidden corners to discover. By evening, work your way to Viterbo and explore its medieval center with its quiet stone alleys.

Lake Bolsena
Start early with cornetto and strong Italian coffee for breakfast. Then head to Civita di Bagnoregio, an old hilltop town that sits on the edge of erosion and has only around 11 people living there. Later, spend time by Lake Bolsena where you can swim in the clear volcanic waters and walk through the nearby town of Bolsena.

Return to Rome Airport
Return your rental car to the local agency and head to Rome airport. Check in for your flight and wrap up your trip.

Perugia
Get to know Perugia, a lively city full of students and known for its Umbrian architecture and chocolate. Check out the underground fortress of Rocca Paolina and walk through one of Italy's best squares with views across the region. You can also walk the old medieval aqueduct. After that, head back and relax by the pool at your place for the rest of the day.

Assisi
Travel to Assisi, which has a special spiritual feel and lots of history to explore. Wander the medieval streets and look at the old architecture, then visit the pilgrimage site connected to St. Francis. Spend the rest of your time taking in the quiet atmosphere and the views of the landscape around town.

Narni - Nera River
Visit Cascata delle Marmore, a 165-meter artificial waterfall built by the ancient Romans. Walk the paths and climb the stairs to see the falls from different angles, and if the sun's out you might catch rainbows in the mist. There's optional white-water rafting if you want more activity. After that, explore nearby spots like the old town of Narni or drive along the Nera River.

Orvieto
Head to Orvieto and see its famous striped cathedral with its one-of-a-kind design. Take the cable car up to the medieval town, then go down into the Well of St. Patrick to see what's below. Walk through Corso Cavour to find local crafts and wine, check out Piazza del Popolo, and spend time looking at the Duomo di Orvieto. If there's time, swing by Todi on your way back.
