    Manali to Barot Valley

An early morning ride takes you to Barot Valley, a charming village that dates back to the 1920s during British rule. The route winds through pine forests and small villages with very little traffic, so you'll mostly have the mountains and the road to yourself. After checking into your accommodation, you can freshen up and take a walk around town to get a feel for the place.

You'll pass through busier towns like Jogindernagar and Paprola before things quieten down near the tea plantations around Palampur. Once you've settled in and freshened up, head out to explore McLeod Ganj and visit Dharamsala, where you can check out His Holiness the Dalai Lama's residence and monastery if it's open. The local cafes here are worth spending time in.

    Dharamsala to Khajjiar

Today's a scenic mountain ride as you travel on the Pahari road, which means you're taking mountain routes instead of highways for a more beautiful journey. Khajjiar, often called the Mini Swiss of India, has a small lake surrounded by towering Deodar trees with crisp mountain air. The setting gives you that feeling of being somewhere quite different from the lowlands.

Things take a relaxed pace today since the distance isn't as demanding, giving you more time to soak in Khajjiar's surroundings. After Chamba, the roads smooth out with minimal traffic, but then the real climbing starts as you head toward Sach Pass. Along the way you'll pass Gujjar communities returning from summer pastures in the mountains, plus small villages and terraced fields that show how people farm here.

The tarmac gives way to dusty but decent roads near Satrundi, and as you climb higher, valley views open up below you. A small shrine to Jot Wali Mata marks the pass itself. The descent to Killar is intense with rocky, muddy, dusty roads and narrow valleys where drops can reach 200 meters.

Traffic is sparse, just occasional buses and jeeps. As you near Udaipur, young pine forests start appearing (locals call it Mini Manali). Stop at the 11th-century Mrikula Devi Temple dedicated to Goddess Kali, then continue through Pattan Valley villages to reach Jispa on good roads.

This road opened in 2020 and is still being developed, making it a challenging 42km stretch but one that rewards you with incredible landscapes. This pass closes for 7 to 8 months each winter. You'll see the Drang Drung Glacier (second largest in the region) and summer camps where Zanskar herders stay with their animals. Rangdum sits in the most isolated part of Suru Valley between colorful, glacier-covered Rocky Mountains. The 18th-century Buddhist Monastery here has about 40 resident monks. As you move into Suru Valley, greenery increases and you'll understand why many consider it one of the most beautiful sections of this entire tour.

Along this stretch you'll also pass Sangam Point where the Zanskar and Indus rivers meet, Magnetic Hill, and Pathar Sahib, a Sikh Temple.
