Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Bogotá

You'll arrive in Bogotá and settle into Colombia's capital city set high in the Andes. The day takes you through La Candelaria, where colonial streets are lined with murals and historic buildings that tell the city's story. You'll check out the Gold Museum and the Botero Museum to see impressive art collections, then spend time trying local food and wandering through neighborhoods where the city's energy really shows. This gives you a feel for Bogotá's character and gets you oriented before heading into the countryside tomorrow.

    Optional Activities

    • Explore La Candelaria colonial district
    • Visit Gold Museum
    • Visit Botero Museum
    • Try local ajiaco at restaurants in the city

  2. Day 2

    Bogotá to Guatavita Lagoon

Early this morning you'll head north of Bogotá toward Guatavita Lagoon, which sits above 3,000 meters elevation. The hike takes you through thick high-Andean forest, and as you get closer to the lagoon the air gets thinner and the views open up. At the lagoon itself you'll learn about the Legend of El Dorado and the sacred significance this place held for the Muisca people. The village of Guatavita near the lagoon is small and charming, and then you'll drive back to Bogotá by evening, your legs a bit tired but with something memorable to reflect on.

Today you're out on a guided wildlife tour through protected land where you'll see native species across several hours. Colorful birds move through the canopy while larger animals like mammals appear if you're patient and quiet. The focus here is learning how conservation work actually happens and why protecting these ecosystems matters for the region's future. You'll have time to photograph and observe, and guides explain what you're seeing and why each species plays a role in the forest.

  4. Day 4

After that, you head to Victoria Regia Nature Reserve to see the giant lotus plants from high bridges built specifically so you don't disrupt the water below. Later in the afternoon, boats take you to Puerto Nariño where you'll check into your hotel and rest a bit. At dusk you'll get back on a boat for a traditional ride on the Loretoyacu River looking for pink and grey dolphins as the jungle darkens and the sun drops behind the trees.

Later you'll have a meal cooked by an Indigenous family in Mocagua, eating food prepared the way they do. While receiving a finalized schedule was a bit delayed, all of our transport smooth and organized, our local guide Roberto was friendly and knowledgeable, and each day’s featured excursions ended up being the source of core memories for our trip. I’m grateful for Responsible Travel South America’s responsive nature to answering any questions or concerns that we had, and for helping to make planning our time in Cartagena a bit easier!

We had a great trip to Peru and Equator Aoril ~May of 2025. Everything was arranged according to what was stated and planned- all pickups be it at the airport or for the day trips were on time. We had great tour guides. My only suggestion would be better rooms in some of the hotels that were picked- in two of the hotels we got rooms where they could have done better- Guayaquil and Cusco being the two places. Shout out to our tour planner Ronnie- did a great job and was very responsive- thanks!
