Machame Gate to Machame Camp
You'll drive to Machame Gate at 1,800m/5,906ft where your Kilimanjaro climb begins. From there, trek up to Machame Camp at 3,000m/9,843ft through forest and grassland. This first day is about getting your body used to the altitude while covering about 5 miles. You'll set up camp and spend the evening eating and resting to prepare for what's ahead.

Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Leave Machame Camp and trek through rainforests mixed with moorland terrain as you head toward Shira Camp at 3,840m/12,598ft. The path takes you through changing landscapes, so you'll notice how the vegetation shifts as you climb higher. It's roughly 5 miles of hiking, and your body continues adjusting to the thinner air. By evening you'll reach camp and have time to rest and eat.

Shira Camp to Barranco Camp
Trek onward to Barranco Camp at 3,950m/12,959ft, and you'll pass by Lava Tower along the way. This route is specifically designed to help your body acclimate properly before making your final push. You'll hike about 4 miles today, and while the distance is shorter, the elevation gain matters for your acclimatization. After reaching camp, you'll have plenty of time to recover before the next day.

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
This is where the route gets physically challenging. You'll tackle the Barranco Wall, a steep rocky section that's one of the toughest parts of the Machame route. After working through that, continue trekking to Karanga Camp at 3,995m/13,106ft. The wall demands good fitness and focus, but it's a technical section rather than a long distance hike. By late afternoon you'll reach camp and have earned a solid meal and sleep.

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Trek to Barafu Camp at 4,673m/15,331ft, your final camp before the summit attempt. The hike is about 4 miles and you'll gain significant elevation. Once there, you'll eat an early dinner and try to sleep before the midnight wake-up call. This camp is cold and exposed, so bring warm layers. Your guides will help you prepare mentally and physically for what happens next.

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Around midnight, you'll wake up and start the final push toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895m/19,341ft, Africa's highest point. The trek takes about 5 to 7 hours depending on your pace and how your body handles the altitude. You'll summit in the early morning to catch sunrise, then descend down to Mweka Camp at 3,068m/10,066ft for rest and recovery. This is an exhausting but unforgettable day.

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate and Return to Moshi
After breakfast and a final rest, descend to Mweka Gate where your climb officially ends. Here you'll receive your summit certificates recognizing what you've accomplished. From the gate, you'll drive back to Moshi for the evening to clean up, eat a proper meal, and celebrate finishing the mountain. It's a good day to reflect on the whole experience and rest your legs.
