Medan to Bukit Lawang
Spend the day exploring Medan, Sumatra's largest city. You'll see the Al-Mashun Great Mosque and the 30-room Maimun Palace, then walk through Vihara Gunung Timur Temple with its Chinese architecture. After checking out the historic Pajak Ikan Lama market, grab a traditional Padang lunch like locals do. Later you'll drive to Bukit Lawang and check into your hotel.

Bukit Lawang
Head into Gunung Leuser National Park for a moderate trek where you'll search for wild orangutans and other wildlife. It's one of only two places on Earth where you can see orangutans in their natural habitat. After the hike, cool off with a river tube ride back to the starting point. By evening you'll join a local cooking class to learn how to make traditional Batak cuisine.

Bukit Lawang to Berastagi

Berastagi to Samosir Island
After breakfast, drive to Dokan Village to learn about the Batak ethnic group who have lived in this region for hundreds of years around Lake Toba. You'll tour the village, then continue to Sipiso Piso Waterfall on your way to Parapat Harbor. From there, take a ferry across Toba Lake to reach Samosir Island, a large volcanic island in the middle of the lake, where you'll settle in and have dinner with the group.

Samosir Island to Medan
Start your day on Samosir Island by heading to the Tombs of Tomok, where you'll learn about local legends and the significance of these burial sites to the Batak people. After spending time there, it's on to Ambarita Village where you can walk through traditional architecture and get a feel for how locals live. There's a dance performance scheduled during your time in the village, so you'll have a chance to see that before lunch. In the afternoon, catch the ferry back to Parapat Harbor, then drive toward Medan for the evening. You'll cover quite a bit of ground today, so pace yourself and bring water for the island portions.

Magelang to Solo
Get up before sunrise to hike to Setumbu Hill for an easy trek that brings you above the early morning fog. You'll see jungle-topped temple mountains spread out below you. After you descend, take an easy biking tour through the village to see Borobudur Temple and the traditional market. Later, drive to Solo.
