Itinerary
- Day 1
Londorossi Park Gate to Mti Mkubwa
You'll start with breakfast and a briefing before heading out on a 3-hour drive to Londorossi Park Gate. A 4WD vehicle takes over from there, following forest tracks to Lemosho Glades. The hiking begins through montane forest as you make your way to Mti Mkubwa campsite, gaining elevation as you go.

Shira Ridge to Shira 1 Camp
After breakfast, the trail gets steeper and you'll enter giant heather moorland. You'll cross several streams while moving over Shira Ridge, then descend gently to Shira 1 camp positioned by a stream on the Shira Plateau.

Shira 2 Camp Acclimatization Day
After breakfast, you'll take a gentle hike across the plateau to Shira 2 camp situated on moorland meadows by a stream. This day focuses on acclimatization, so there are various hiking options available if you want to explore the plateau and adjust to the altitude.

Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
From Shira Plateau, you'll continue east up a ridge toward Kibo peak, heading southeast toward Lava Tower (known as the 'Shark's Tooth'). After passing the Arrow Glacier junction, you'll descend to Barranco Camp. The day ends at roughly the same elevation where you started, but it's critical for acclimatization as you navigate this varied terrain.

Barranco Wall to Karanga Valley
After breakfast, you'll leave Barranco and tackle the steep Barranco Wall. The trail continues through Karanga Valley until you reach the junction connecting with the Mweka Trail.

Barafu Camp Summit Preparation
You'll keep climbing to Barafu Camp, completing the South Circuit with views of the summit from various angles along the way. Once there, you'll rest, have dinner, and spend time preparing mentally and physically for the summit push ahead.

Summit Attempt and Descent
Very early in the morning between midnight and 2am, you'll head toward the summit moving between Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers in a northwesterly direction. The ascent through heavy scree to Stella Point on the crater rim is the most challenging part of the trek. You'll catch sunrise either at Stella Point or from the summit itself. After reaching Uhuru Peak, you'll descend to Mweka Camp with a lunch break at Barafu. This is the longest and most physically demanding day of the entire trek.

- Day 8
Mweka Gate and Return to Moshi
After breakfast, you'll continue descending to Mweka Park Gate where you'll receive your summit certificates. Lower elevations tend to be wet and muddy, so gaiters and poles come in handy. Switch into shorts and a t-shirt (but keep rain gear accessible). Your vehicle meets you at the gate for the roughly 60-minute drive back to your hotel in Moshi.
