Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Arrival in Athens

Your driver will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel situated right along the Aegean Sea coastline, giving you some distance from Athens's busy center. This evening is yours to settle in and get comfortable. You might want to take a dip in the pool to refresh yourself after traveling, or simply relax and get an early night before the days ahead.

  2. Day 2

    Nafplio - Mycenae - Lagadia

Head out to explore the Peloponnese region starting at Epidaurus, where you'll find the ancient sanctuary dedicated to Asclepius. The theater there is particularly interesting because of how well sound travels through it. After that, drive to Nafplio, which served as Greece's first capital, then continue on to Mycenae to see the Lion Gate and the Treasury of Atreus. By evening you'll reach Lagadia, a mountain village that offers great views across the Peloponnesian landscape.

    Sparta - Mystras - Lagadia

You'll head out early for a drive through the Peloponnese, covering about 300 km today. First stop is Sparta, where you'll walk through the ancient military city and get a sense of how this warrior society operated centuries ago. The landscape here tells part of the story on its own. From there, you'll continue to Mystras, a Byzantine site perched on a hillside with ruins of churches, monasteries, and fortifications scattered throughout. Wandering around these remains gives you a real feel for medieval Greek history. Later in the afternoon you'll make your way back to your hotel in Lagadia, so plan for some driving time as the sun starts to set.

Walk through the Sacred Grove and check out the Temple of Zeus, which housed one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. You'll also see the stadium, gymnasiums, bath complexes, and various treasure houses that show how important this place once was. Later, spend time in the renovated museum where you can see significant pieces of Greek art and sculpture.

  5. Day 5

    Delphi

This morning you're heading to Delphi, one of ancient Greece's most important religious sites. The drive covers roughly 230 km, so you'll have time to settle in once you arrive. At the archaeological site, you'll walk through the Temple of Apollo, check out the various treasure houses built by different city-states, and see where ancient Greeks believed the center of the world actually was. The theater sits higher up on the slope and offers views back down across the sanctuary. After you've covered the main ruins, the Archaeological Museum is right there with artifacts that help fill in the historical context. Plan to spend the bulk of your day here since there's quite a bit to take in.

  6. Day 6

    Athens

The Meteora monasteries are something special, sitting atop cliff formations that look almost like swallows' nests. Dating back to the 14th century, some still have monks living in them today. You'll explore one of these monasteries and get a sense of why monks chose such remote locations. After that, drive south through central Greece's historic areas before arriving back in Athens. You'll get a drive through the city center for an introduction to Greece's ancient capital.

Walk through the Propylaea entrance gates and stand in front of the Parthenon ruins. The Erechtheion is also there, with its distinctive caryatid columns. Then visit the Acropolis Museum to see important pieces of ancient Greek art. You'll have some free time afterward to wander through different parts of the city on your own.

The tour guide was great, organized, highly motivated, extensive knowledge. The hotels were ok, the rooms varied, obviously the cheap option within the hotels. The choice of flights was catastrophic. Instead of direct flights, there were stopovers with long waiting times, we were practically on the road for a whole day each time. The flight from Vienna to Edinborough also had to be rebooked, but this was not the responsibility of the travel agency.
