  2. Day 2

    Tbilisi

    Start exploring Tbilisi's old town on foot and by metro, getting a feel for how the city blends East and West together. You'll walk through oriental markets, see the historic sulphur baths, check out churches and mosques, and notice the traditional wooden houses with their carved balconies all around you.

    Sighnaghi - Gudauri

    Drive to Mtskheta to see the Dzhvari Church and Sveti Tskhoveli Cathedral, both UNESCO-protected sites. From there, you'll head along the historic Georgian Military Road through Ananuri with its 1698 castle and church. You'll pass ancient fortresses and watchtowers as the road climbs up to Gudauri ski resort at 2,157 meters/7,077 feet, so you're getting some serious elevation gain.

    Gudauri - Stepantsminda

    This morning you'll drive to the Cross Pass at 2,395 meters/7,857 feet with nice views of the Caucasian mountains and Kaishuri Valley. Then continue to Stepantsminda village where Mount Kasbek (5,033 meters/16,512 feet) comes into view on clear days. You can do a 2 to 3 hour hike up to the 14th-century Zminda Sameda Church of Gergeti, or take an all-terrain vehicle if you'd rather ride.

You'll see Stalin's birthplace from the outside and then explore the cave city of Uplistsikhe, which used to be a trading hub on the Silk Road with buildings going back to the 2nd and 3rd centuries A.D.

    Spend time in the 3,500-year-old town of Kutaisi checking out the Bagrati Cathedral. After that, head to the UNESCO-protected Gelati complex, which served as a spiritual and cultural center with the Cathedral of the Mother of God, churches of St. George and St. Nicholas, a bell tower, and an academy. Later you'll see the excavations at Vani with ancient goldsmith treasures before heading to Batumi on the Black Sea coast.

    Wir waren sehr zufrieden mit der gesamten Reise! Die Programmangaben stimmten zu 100%, was vorab manchmal kaum zu fassen ist, aber vor Ort absolut verständlich wurde, vor allem aufgrund der langen Distanzen. Für meinen Gatten und mich waren die langen Autofahrten kein Problem – insbesondere, weil unsere Guide Eteri die Zeit mit aktuellen und historischen Informationen sowie persönlichen Geschichten sehr kurzweilig gestaltete. Ihre Spontanität und Flexibilität bei der Anpassung des Programms an wetterbedingte Änderungen verdienen ein großes Lob! Auch ihre Restaurantempfehlungen an unseren freien Abenden waren hervorragend, und sie kümmerte sich auch um die Reservierungen und den Transport. Die Hotels lagen alle sehr zentral, waren gut ausgestattet, und das Frühstück war stets gut. Besonders hervorzuheben war das Abendessen, vor allem die Tafel in Mestia – ein Genuss! Alles in allem hat das Programm genau unseren Wünschen entsprochen. Vielen Dank für die hervorragende Organisation – wir werden Sie gerne weiterempfehlen!
