Caucasus Tours & Trips
Georgian wine in qvevri tastes like nothing else, Tbilisi's sulfur baths are wonderfully weird, and that aerial tramway to Tatev in Armenia is the world's longest. Vardzia's cave city is carved right into the cliffs, Baku's old city mixes ancient and modern brilliantly, and Mount Ararat's view from Armenia is stunning. Most people haven't heard of half these places, which makes discovering them even better.

Fantastic tour to 3 amazing countries. The local guides were friendly and very knowledgeable. We even got to see a few extra places in Armenia which were beautiful. Hotels were all lovely and in a great position. Penguin travel are very responsive, the land border was closed between georgia and Azerbaijan so we flew instead, some organisational issues in part due to the region and in part as the first time trip has run since covid. These were all resolved. Would definitely book with penguin again.

Jean and I enjoyed everything, from start to finish. At least among our friends, the South Caucasus regions is so little-known that the customary reaction when we mentioned where we were going was, "Where is that?" We are just now sorting through our photographs, to make a photo book of the trip. (By the way, the excellent weather contributed to my many excellent photographs.) We felt like we were well watched over, and well cared for every step of the way. The food was excellent, and none of the four of us had any adverse reaction to any of the food. Bottled water was always there for us. Itinerary: Excellent. We particularly enjoyed the trip to the Davit Gareja monastery in Georgia, and Geghard monastery and Garni Temple in Armenia. I wish we had a little more time in Sheki, Azerbaijan, but you can't see everything. We enjoyed the palace there. None of the drives were too long, your drivers were excellent, and the trip was well-paced. Each guide made sure that we saw everything on the itinerary. Guides: Again, excellent. We particularly enjoyed the guide in Armenia, and her recommendations (and those of the driver) regarding food. Each was fluent in English. Cars: Very good to excellent. We had plenty of room for the four of us, and the cars were always clean and well-stocked with water. Drivers: Excellent and outstanding. Skilled in rural and urban traffic. The driver in Georgia was especially helpful to Jean, who had double knee replacement a year ago. The driver in Armenia was a real gem. One day he prepared a roadside snack for us of local grapes and other food that he brought with him. I trusted each of them in often difficult road conditions. Hotels: Yes, again, excellent. The hotel in Baku was fine, and suffered only in comparison to the outstanding hotels in Tbilisi and Yerevan. The two rural hotels, in Sheki and Telavi, were real finds. Each of the three hotels in Baku, Tbilisi, and Yerevan was wonderfully located. You just had to step out of the door to be near shopping, restaurants, etc. In conclusion, this trip exceeded our already high expectations in every way. I'm so glad that we worked with you, and that my wife's friend recommended you. We will always remember this trip, and the expertise and hospitality shown by your guides. Best wishes for 2020
Private South Caucasus Tour (Azerbaijan - Georgia - Armenia) - 14 days - A

This was an excellent tour covering parts of three fascinating countries. The price of the tour reflects the fact it includes a meal each day (either lunch or dinner) in addition to breakfast every morning. The price also includes ALL entrance fees with no further charges made. All transport is also included, so this tour is quite comprehensive. To speak about our guides and drivers: in all three countries the guides were friendly, welcoming, knowledgeable and approachable. Arif in Azerbaijan, Ilona in Georgia and Meline in Armenia all did everything they could to give us the best possible experience of their respective countries. They felt like expert members of our group more than “just” service providers. Similarly our drivers added to the enjoyment of the trip. Unfortunately I do not remember all their names but I give special mention to Basil and George in Georgia and Ashot in Armenia. I should also mention our transfer guides in Armenia: Tigran and Samvel who ensured we were transferred between the border and our hotel and vice versa without fuss. Thank you also to Ms Nino at the Sakura organisation for her hard work before and during the trip to make the tour run smoothly. I can thoroughly recommend this tour and the Sakura tour operator based on this experience.

Winter has fewer options but offers something special in the Caucasus. Our Georgia discovery tour adapts nicely to winter conditions, focusing on Tbilisi's historic areas, food workshops and lower-altitude wine regions. Our customers enjoy cozy evenings in family guesthouses, learning to make khachapuri cheese bread and warming up with local wines. For winter sports enthusiasts, the Georgia mountain tour includes skiing in Gudauri while still covering cultural sites and wine regions at lower elevations.

- Spring 2026
Spring works incredibly well for exploring the Caucasus, with our most requested tours really coming into their own. The full Azerbaijan-Georgia-Armenia circuit gets great feedback from our customers, especially when they catch the mountain passes filled with spring wildflowers. People love exploring the ancient petroglyphs at Qobustan before moving into Georgia's wine country as the first vines start budding. There's also a focused Georgia cultural tour where you'll cook with local families, visit Kakheti's wineries and see mountain communities preparing for farming season. Our 12-day three-country tour stands out for deep cultural connections - travelers particularly enjoy the spring festivals and learning how locals make wine in traditional qvevri clay vessels.

- Fall / Autumn 2026
Autumn brings harvest time and our most popular tours focus on wine and food experiences. The Georgia wine regions cultural tour lets you join the traditional rtveli grape harvest and learn winemaking from local families. Our premium three-country journey really shines in fall - you'll see Armenia's monasteries surrounded by red and gold leaves, experience Azerbaijan's harvest festivals in mountain villages and join Georgia's wine country at its busiest. Our travelers tell us they love joining cooking classes with local families, learning to make Georgian bread and helping prepare harvest meals. The Georgia-Azerbaijan combo tour fits perfectly in autumn, with ideal weather for exploring Tbilisi's old quarter and visiting mountain communities preparing for winter. Among the Caucasus tour operators, Intrepid really delivers with solid itineraries that work well - their guides know the region inside out and our travelers consistently give them high marks. If you're looking at Georgia specifically, Glad Travel Georgia gets lots of love on TourRadar, especially from people traveling solo. They're quite flexible with customizing trips and making adjustments to suit different needs. Tour Georgia has had mixed feedback lately - they're not quite hitting the consistent quality levels you get with Intrepid. For Armenia specifically, The Caucasus Tours is doing great work, and their guide Mariam is particularly good. She knows Armenian history, culture and hidden spots in depth, and she shares it all with genuine enthusiasm. The thing about getting around the Caucasus is you really want an operator who understands the local dynamics and logistics. That's where companies like Intrepid and The Caucasus Tours shine - they've got those practical details sorted while keeping the cultural experiences authentic. Just keep in mind that in this region, having a knowledgeable guide makes a huge difference - it's not just about getting from A to B but understanding the complex history, traditions and also current situation in each area you visit.

How Safe Is Independent Travel in the Caucasus?
You can definitely explore the Caucasus on your own especially Georgia where you'll find good transport links and English signs in the bigger cities. The Georgian Military Highway makes it easy to get from Tbilisi to Kazbegi with regular minibuses running the route. Getting to those amazing medieval tower villages in Svaneti or that hidden gem Lahij village in Azerbaijan though you might want some local help with that. Most travelers find it useful to join guided tours in Armenia especially around those incredible monasteries like Geghard and Noravank where you'll get so much more out of the experience with someone who knows the history.
What's The Best Way to Really Experience Those Famous Mountains?
There's something for everyone in the Caucasus Mountains whether you're a serious hiker or just want amazing views. Head to Becho village and take that beautiful 6km trail to Shdugra Waterfall where you'll get incredible views of Mount Ushba or challenge yourself with that stunning 12.5km hike up to Gergeti Trinity Church at 2170m with Mount Kazbegi towering above at 5047m. Nature lovers should check out Lagodekhi's trails where you might spot rare Lagodekhian gentiana on your way to that impressive 40-meter Ninoskhevi waterfall. Love winter sports? Gudauri's got great skiing December through April and in summer you can actually paraglide over those dramatic valleys.
How Can I Really Get Involved in Local Culture?
Beyond those fantastic Georgian feasts called Supras there's so much hands-on culture to experience here. You can make bread in traditional tonir ovens in Garni village or join locals making churchkhela in Kvareli using ancient methods with grape juice and nuts. In Kakheti you'll find family wineries still making wine the 8000-year-old UNESCO way in underground clay vessels. Over in Azerbaijan's Lahij you can watch copper artisans at work while Armenia's got these amazing carpet weaving workshops in Yerevan where you can learn traditional techniques.
What Are Some Hidden Gems Most Tourists Miss?
You've got to visit the Pankisi Valley where the Kist community makes this incredible Chechen dish called jijig galnish. The David Gareji Monastery complex sits right on Georgia's border with Azerbaijan and those 6th-century frescoes are just incredible. Ever heard of Karahunj? It's like Armenia's version of Stonehenge but actually older. And Qobustan in Azerbaijan is just mind-blowing with over 6000 ancient rock carvings plus these fascinating mud volcanoes they've got half of all the world's mud volcanoes right there.
Where Can I Find the Best Local Food?
Every area's got its specialty and you're going to want to try them all. Get yourself to Telavi for proper Kakhetian mtsvadi with some local Saperavi wine or head to Pasanauri they're basically the dumpling capital for the best khinkali you'll ever taste. In Sheki Azerbaijan you've got to try their piti it's this amazing lamb stew they cook in individual clay pots. Over in Armenia's Garni village you can watch them make traditional lavash and Yerevan's GUM market is where you'll find everything from spas to proper Armenian khorovats. The wine scene's best in Georgia's Kakheti where families still use those traditional qvevri vessels just like their ancestors did.
