Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Arrival in Tromsø

You'll arrive in Tromsø and catch the public airport bus straight to your hotel in the city center. The city sits 500 km north of the Arctic Circle and basically serves as Europe's Arctic hub. Once you're settled, the evening is completely yours to walk around and check out the restaurants and bars scattered throughout this university town.

  2. Day 2

    Tromsø

This day is wide open for you to explore Tromsø at your own pace. Walk through the Arctic metropolis where major North Pole expeditions historically launched, or if you want something more active, there's an optional snowmobile safari available. If you go for it, a guide takes you out in a small group after a quick briefing for some real Arctic adventure.

  3. Day 3

    Tromsø to Uløya

Spend your morning checking out Tromsø on your own terms. The University Museum is worth a visit, and the wooden houses in the city center are nice to walk through. Polaria (the Arctic aquarium) and the Arctic Ocean Cathedral are also good options if you're interested. Later in the day, you'll take a minibus and ferry out to Uløya island, which is one of the best spots for Northern Lights viewing. You'll arrive at Arctic Panorama Lodge in Uløybukt, a family-run place with cozy rooms, a fireplace lounge, fjord views, and a small bar.

  4. Day 4

    Arctic Activities

What you do depends on when your tour starts. November through January 17, you'll head out on a RIB boat with a guide to watch for orcas, minke whales, and humpbacks in the wild. There's a heated cabin on board where you can learn about the marine mammals while staying comfortable. From January 24 on, you'll do a snowshoe or nature hike (about 2 hours) through the winter landscape, learning about Sami reindeer herding traditions. After lunch back at the lodge, you'll have free time, then gather around an open campfire in a Lapp tent to hunt for the Northern Lights for roughly 3 hours before heading back inside.

    Meals
    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Included Activities

    • Whale safari in RIB boat (1 November to 17 January tours) or snowshoe/nature hike (from 24 January onwards)
    • Northern Lights viewing around open campfire in Lapp tent
    • Learning about indigenous Sami culture and lifestyle
    Landmarks
    Lyngen and Kafjord
  5. Day 5

    Dog Sled Safari

You'll spend about 3 hours on a dog sled ride through the snowy Arctic. After a brief rundown, you take the reins of your husky team as the musker and steer through the wilderness yourself. The dogs handle the cold Arctic climate just fine. There's a hearty snack break built into the ride. Keep in mind, if your tour starts before late November, the sleds run on wheels instead since snow's thinner, but it's still a solid Arctic experience.

    Meals
    Breakfast, Picnic, Dinner

    Included Activities

    • 3-hour dog sled safari with husky team (approximately 3 hours)
    Landmarks
    Arctic Wilderness
  6. Day 6

    Snowmobile Safari & Leisure

For tours starting January 24 and later, you'll do a fast snowmobile safari (roughly 3 hours) across the Arctic landscape. If that's not your speed, you can spend a quieter day by the fireplace or try out the spa with massages and cosmetic treatments (optional). A low-key walk around the lodge to soak in the Arctic vibe works too.

    Meals
    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Included Activities

    • Snowmobile safari (approximately 3 hours, for tours starting 24 January onwards)

    Optional Activities

    • Relaxing massage at lodge spa
    • Cosmetic treatments at lodge spa
    • Leisurely walk around the lodge
  7. Day 7

    Uløya to Tromsø

It's time to leave Uløya this morning. You'll take the ferry and minibus back to Tromsø. From there, the rest of the day is yours to see more of the university town. The Polar Museum is solid, or ride the Fjellheisen cable car up Storsteinen for great views across the city and surrounding mountains. Tromsø gets called the Venice of the North because of how it sits on islands connected by bridges to the mainland. You'll stay near the airport hotel for one more night.

The round trip by bus was great because we saw so much of the Lofoten Islands. As we often had bright sunshine during the day, the high snow-capped mountains with the sea in the foreground were particularly impressive. Regina was an absolutely confident tour guide and enriched the tour with her optimistic manner. Unfortunately, we didn't manage to see the Northern Lights - they were there, but we couldn't see them because of the thick cloud cover, rain or snow. After the bus trip, we also booked a snowshoe hike with Wandering Owl around Tromsö - also a recommendation - although unfortunately you can't book the powder snow that we had. All in all, a wonderful trip with lots of nice memories.
