Itinerary
- Day 1
Keflavik to Reykjavik
You'll arrive at Keflavik Airport and pick up your rental car for the drive into Reykjavik, about 50 km away. It's a straightforward route that takes roughly an hour, giving you time to settle into your accommodation and get oriented before your first night in Iceland's capital.
- Day 2
Reykjavik to Snaefellsnes to Borgarnes
Starting from Reykjavik, head across Walfjord toward Reykholt to check out the warm water springs and Hraunfossar lava waterfalls near Husafell. After that, you'll make your way to the Snaefellsnes peninsula where fishing villages like Hellnar and Arnastapi sit along dramatic rocky coastlines. The black sand beach at Djupalonssandur and the iconic Kirkjufell mountain are stops along the way before finishing near Borgarnes. This 380 km drive takes about 5 hours total.

Borgarnes to Akureyri
Drive north from Borgarnes toward Skagafjordur, an area known for its connection to Icelandic horses, and continue along the fishing villages that line Iceland's longest fjord, Eyjafijordur. You'll reach Akureyri, North Iceland's main town with around 17,000 people, where you can walk through the pedestrian zone and visit Nonnahus, the historic home of children's author Jon Sveinsson. The 350 km journey takes approximately 5 hours of driving.

This 200 km stretch takes about 4 hours of driving.

Lake Myvatn to Egilsstadir
Travel through otherworldly, highland-like landscape toward Egilsstadir, but first make a detour into Jokulsargljufur National Park to see Dettifoss, Europe's most powerful waterfall dropping 45 meters into a dramatic canyon. A short hike gets you close to the falls, then you'll continue along the ring road to Egilsstadir, a small town with just over 2,500 inhabitants serving as East Iceland's main hub. The full journey covers 390 km over about 6 hours.

Höfn to Kirkjubæjarklaustur/Vik
Head to Iceland's south coast and the glacier giants waiting there. Visit Jokulsarlon glacial lake where bright blue ice blocks break off from Breidamerkurjokull glacier and drift in the lagoon. You can walk right up to the ice, spot seals on floes, or hike Diamond Beach if you're up for it. After that, continue to Skaftafell National Park where glaciers flow between mountains to the Ring Road, and hike to Svartifoss waterfall framed by black basalt columns. This 230 km section takes about 4 hours.

Before ending near Selfoss, spend time at the interactive Lava Center learning about Icelandic volcanism. The 220 km drive takes about 5 hours.

Experience the Golden Circle by visiting three of Iceland's most famous attractions. Start at Thingvellir National Park where the Eurasian and North American continental plates meet and where Iceland's first parliament convened in 930. Next, see the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall dropping in stages into a deep gorge. Watch the Strokkur geyser shoot water 15 to 30 meters high every 5 to 10 minutes. Later, head back to Reykjavik to explore the lively capital, harbor district, and Hallgrimskirkja Church. The 220 km route takes about 3 hours of driving.
