Itinerary
- Day 1
Keflavik to Reykjavik
You'll land at Keflavik Airport and start driving toward Reykjavik for your first night. The route takes about 45 minutes and covers roughly 50 km, giving you time to settle in and get oriented after your flight.
- Day 2
Reykjavik to Vik
This is a full day on the Golden Circle route. You'll start at Thingvellir National Park, then head to Gullfoss waterfall and see Strokkur geyser shooting water about 30 m high every 8-10 minutes. After that, you'll drive south to check out Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls along the coast. There's time to stop at thermal baths if you want, or you can do a glacier snowmobile safari in the highlands. You'll cover around 280 km with about 4.5 hours of driving, ending in the Vik area by evening.

- Day 3
Vik
You'll spend the day in and around Vik. Reynisfjara Beach is just a short walk away and features the unique rock formation Reynisdrangar on its black sand shore. If you're interested, there are optional trips to the Westman Islands by ferry from Landeyjarhorn, or you can book a glacier hike on Solheimajökull with a guide. This gives you flexibility to either relax or stay active depending on your mood.

Vik to Hófn
You'll drive from Vik across the Myrdalssandur sandy plain, one of Iceland's largest expanses. At Skaftafell National Park, you can hike about 6 km on maintained trails to reach Svartifoss waterfall, which drops into a basin surrounded by dark basalt columns. You'll also see Svinafellsjökull, a glacier tongue that moves up to one meter daily. The full drive to Höfn covers around 280 km and takes approximately 5 hours.

- Day 5
Hófn
You'll explore the area around Vatnajökull, which spans over 8,300 square kilometers. At Jökulsarlon glacier lagoon, you can see ice blocks calving off the glacier up close. There's an optional boat trip between the icebergs if you want a closer look. Then you'll visit Diamond Beach where icebergs sit on black sand. This region has appeared in several major films, including Batman Begins and James Bond movies.

Höfn to Egilsstadir
Travel along the east coast past numerous fjords and small fishing villages. Stop in Djupivogur, a friendly fishing village with historic houses, a museum, and the oldest harbour in the East Fjords dating back to the 16th century. From there you'll continue through steep mountain landscapes, beaches, and glaciers, plus some forests that are uncommon in Iceland. The drive to Egilsstadir covers about 270 km in around 4.5 hours.

Hófn to Lake Myvatn
You'll drive along the edge of the eastern highlands toward Lake Myvatn. The area is full of volcanic features including the pseudo-crater at Skutustadir, the lava labyrinth of Dimmuborgir with bizarre rock formations, and the bubbling mud pools at Namaskard. The drive covers around 180 km and takes approximately 2.5 hours. If you're visiting from mid-September onward, this region offers good chances for Northern Lights viewing.

- Day 8
Lake Myvatn
You have options for how to spend this day near Lake Myvatn. You can relax at thermal baths like Jardbödín Nature Bath or Myvatn Nature Bath if you book ahead. Or you can drive to Godafoss waterfall or explore the Asbyrgi gorge on the Tjörnes peninsula if you'd rather continue exploring natural attractions. The choice depends on whether you want a quieter day or more activity.

Lake Myvatn to Akureyri
You'll stop in Húsavík, a fishing village known for whale watching. There's an optional whale watching tour where you can see whales in their natural habitat. Alternatively, you can swim at the new GeoSea geothermal bath in town before heading to Akureyri, the capital of the north. The drive covers around 230 km and takes about 3 hours.

Akureyri to Borgarnes
You'll drive through landscapes with majestic mountains toward Skagafjördur, known as Iceland's horse center. There's an optional horseback ride available on Icelandic horses if you're interested in something active. Alternatively, you can visit the seal center in Hvammstangi before heading southwest toward Borgarnes. This full drive covers approximately 400 km and takes around 5 hours.

Borgarnes - Snæfellsnes Peninsula
You'll explore the Snæfellsnes peninsula with its coastline around Arnarstapi set against Snæfellsjökull glacier. You'll stop at Kirkjufell, an arrowhead-shaped mountain that gained fame from Game of Thrones but has long been popular with photographers. The peninsula has several caves and lava tubes, and you can book the Vatnshellir Cave Tour as an optional experience. The drive covers around 330 km and takes approximately 4.5 hours.

You have two ways to finish your trip before heading back to Reykjavik. The more adventurous option is to explore an ice cave on Langjökull glacier, Europe's second largest. Or you can relax and head straight back to Reykjavik to visit Fly over Iceland, a flight simulator experience. The drive covers around 200 km and takes approximately 2.5 hours.
