13 Day Iceland Itinerary, incl. Reykjavik and Akureyri
The 13-day route spans 30 locations across Iceland, from Reykjavik to remote Westfjords. Take in the natural wonders of Þingvellir National Park, Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, Lake Mývatn, and Látrabjarg bird cliffs. Includes 12 nights' accommodation and traditional meals at countryside farms.
- Days 1-2
Reykjavik & Golden Circle
Visit Reykjavik's main attractions like Hallgrimskirkja church and the old harbor. Start your Golden Circle tour early to avoid crowds at Thingvellir National Park. At Geysir wait 5-8 minutes between eruptions to get great photos. Visit Gullfoss waterfall in mid-afternoon when sunlight creates beautiful rainbows in the mist. Stay overnight near Hella.
- Days 3-4
South Coast & Glacier Lagoon
Visit Seljalandsfoss waterfall before 9am to beat the crowds. You can walk behind it but bring a raincoat. Take a quick hike to the hidden Gljúfrabúi waterfall nearby. Be careful at Reynisfjara black sand beach and watch for dangerous sneaker waves. A recent visitor shared: "The hotel near Jökulsárlón was basic but perfectly located for sunrise glacier lagoon photos - worth the early wake-up call."
- Days 5-6
East Fjords & Lake Mývatn
Drive through the East Fjords to reach Möðrudalur Iceland's highest settlement at 469m. Watch your step at Dettifoss waterfall as trails can be slippery. You'll need proper hiking boots. Spend 2-3 hours at Lake Mývatn Nature Baths which is less busy and cheaper than Blue Lagoon. Pack a head net if visiting in summer as midges can be numerous.
- Days 7-8
Akureyri & Westfjords
- Days 9-10
Látrabjarg & Red Beach
- Days 11-13
Snæfellsnes Peninsula & Return

12 Days in Iceland, incl. Reykjavik and Akureyri
A grand 12-day circuit leads to 37 destinations across Iceland. The route winds from Reykjavik through Snæfellsnes Peninsula, West Fjords, and South Coast. Three national parks, Látrabjarg bird cliffs, and Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon await, with stays at 8 different carefully selected hotels.
- Days 1-2
Reykjavik & Golden Circle
Take the Flybus shuttle from Keflavík Airport to Reykjavik (50km, 45 minutes). On day two, explore the Golden Circle. Get to Gullfoss waterfall before 10AM to avoid crowds. Stop by a working geothermal greenhouse to learn about local vegetable growing. At Geysir, wait 5-7 minutes between Strokkur eruptions for great photos. Pack good walking shoes for Þingvellir National Park's sometimes slippery paths between tectonic plates.
- Days 3-4
Snæfellsnes Peninsula & West Fjords
Catch the morning ferry from Stykkishólmur to Brjánslækur (2.5 hours). Sit on the port side for glacier views. The Vatnshellir lava cave tour includes a 35m descent, so be prepared. When watching puffins at Látrabjarg cliffs (best mid-May to mid-August), stay well back from the edges. One visitor noted: "The West Fjords were a highlight - hardly any tourists and the most dramatic landscapes I've seen."
- Days 5-6
North Iceland & Akureyri
- Days 7-8
Lake Mývatn & East Fjords
- Days 9-10
Vatnajökull National Park & South Coast
Book your Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon boat tour early. Morning trips offer the best photo opportunities. Bring windproof clothing for Diamond Beach. The Skaftafell glacier walk requires advance booking and proper boots. A traveler shared: "The timing at Jökulsárlön was perfect - we had the lagoon almost to ourselves at 8AM."
- Days 11-12
South Coast & Departure
Visit Reynisfjara black beach early morning. Watch out for waves and never turn your back on them. Pack a raincoat for walking behind Seljalandsfoss waterfall. Protect your camera from spray. Visit the Lava & Volcano Exhibition before heading back to Reykjavik. Plan for 3 hours at the airport on departure day.
What people love about 2-week Iceland tours
- The Great Round Tour: Around Iceland in 13 days
Excellent guide/driver and very good accommodations with one exception. Would recommend highly
- 12 Days Self-drive | Everything you must see in Iceland Ring Road Tour
I was extremely happy with the responsiveness of the tour company and Lyn in particular. Essentially, the company was available to assist literally late into the eve. Provided you take the 12-day itinerary as suggestions of places to see vice a checklist to accomplish, you will not be disappointed. Several of the overnight accommodations were not up to my standards but none were bad. I would happily recommend this tour and give it my stamp of approval by saying I wish it was two days longer!4
- 12 Days Grand Tour of Iceland
I am very happy with the tour overall. In general the itinerary was very good to excellent except 1) the lava cave tour on Day 3 - The cave was very small and dark. It was difficult to see. 2) The micro-brewery tour on Day 7 - the guided tour was too brief and not enough beer tasting or demonstration of the beer making. Transportation was good in general but there was one occasion we thought we were going to be stuck for a few hours up on the snow capped mountain in the late afternoon. However, our tour guide Mimir was able to contact someone and was advised to continue driving to our destination. He had the problem looked at and got his answer the next morning before we left the hotel. In general the accommodation was very good except the 1st and last night. Most hotels had the room overheated and the room temperature is not adjustable. The best hotel was Fosshotel on Day 10. Meals - Most breakfasts were good to very good. The best breakfast was the Fosshotel on Day 11 morning. Most dinners were good to very good. I loved the main course at Icelandair Hotel Hamar, Borgarnes. Guide - Mimir had given us one to three extra sightseeings most days. He was helpful and friendly but he is not a detailed person. He didn't give us any maps or GJ Travel's hand outs until Day 6. It was difficult for me to follow his explanation as I had problem to remember the Icelandic name of places he had told us. Luckily I started collecting the map and information from Day 4. The map I picked up helped me understood/remembered the places we had visited.
