Itinerary
- Day 1
Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins at Umbwe Gate, sitting at 1,600m/5,249ft. You'll trek through dense rainforest on what's a challenging but relatively short route, covering around 11km with roughly 1,000m of elevation gain. The dense vegetation and the steepness of the path make this a tough start, but the trail is shorter than other Kilimanjaro routes. By evening, you'll reach Umbwe Cave campsite at 2,940m/9,646ft where you'll set up for the night and rest after your first day of climbing.

Umbwe Cave to Barranco Camp
Today you continue moving up through the rainforest as the terrain gradually shifts. Around 6km into the trek, you'll notice the vegetation starting to change and the air getting thinner as altitude increases. The path becomes steeper, gaining about 1,000m in elevation. By the time you reach Barranco Camp at 3,950m/12,959ft, you're officially out of the dense forest zone and entering moorland. This campsite sits on a ridge and provides a solid base before tackling the more technical sections ahead.

- Day 3
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
This day features the famous Barranco Wall, a challenging scramble where you'll use your hands to pull yourself up rocky sections. It's short but requires focus and some upper body strength to get through safely. After clearing the wall, the route follows a ridge that offers views across the mountain. You'll trek about 5km total with only around 400m elevation gain, which feels manageable after the wall. Karanga Camp at 4,035m/13,238ft is your destination, and the lower elevation gain means you'll have more energy to recover.

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
You'll tackle a relatively short but steep push up to Barafu Camp, the base camp for your summit attempt. The 4km trek gains about 600m in elevation, and you'll notice the landscape has changed completely to rocky, barren terrain as you enter the alpine desert zone. It's not a long day, but the steepness and thin air make it feel harder than the distance suggests. Reaching Barafu Camp at 4,640m/15,223ft, you'll have the rest of the day to rest, eat well, and mentally prepare for what comes next.

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
This is the hardest day of the entire trek. You'll start early in the morning, often around midnight or 1am, for the summit push to Uhuru Peak at 5,895m/19,341ft. The ascent is gruelling and demands everything you have, both mentally and physically. The thin air, cold temperature, and steep rocky terrain combine to make this an incredibly challenging climb. After celebrating at the summit, you'll descend the same day to Mweka Camp at 3,100m/10,171ft. The descent helps with acclimatization but it's still exhausting, so recovery and rest at camp is crucial.

- Day 6
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Your final day brings a dramatic change as you descend through lush rainforest once again. The 9km trek down loses about 1,600m in elevation, and the vegetation shifts from alpine barren rock back to green forest as you move lower. You'll reach Mweka Gate where park officials will present your certificate of achievement. The successful completion of Kilimanjaro is marked here, and you can reflect on the incredible journey from rainforest to alpine desert and back again.
