Mount Kilimanjaro Moorland
The trail moves into moorland territory where you'll see the landscape shift as vegetation thins out at higher elevation. The changing views around you make the increased effort feel worth it.

Mawenzi Tarn Camp
This is a steady push through Alpine desert with rocky ground and sparse vegetation covering the terrain. Mawenzi Tarn Camp sits below Mawenzi Peak and becomes your destination for the day. You'll cover around 8 kilometres in 4 to 5 hours, though the altitude and thinner air make the difficulty noticeable. Take your time and stick to the slower pace your guide recommends.

Kibo Hut
Today gets you to Kibo Hut, the base camp where you'll prepare for the summit push. The path crosses barren and rocky saddle between the two peaks as you move higher. Approximately 9 kilometres over 4 to 5 hours sounds manageable on paper, but the thin air and altitude make it feel harder than the distance suggests. Rest well at camp and focus on acclimatisation.

Uhuru Peak Summit
The most intense day of your trek happens here on summit day. You'll start your ascent in the middle of the night aiming to reach Uhuru Peak as the sun comes up. Expect to navigate steep and icy ground over about 20 kilometres in 10 to 14 hours, and conditions will be harsh with extreme altitude and cold temperatures. This day tests both your body and mind, so mental preparation matters as much as physical fitness.

Marangu Gate
The descent takes you back down through lush rainforest toward Marangu Gate, which feels like entering a different world after the barren high altitude terrain. Coming down is easier on your legs and lungs than going up, and the green forest around you provides a chance to soak in what you've accomplished. You'll finish the day reflecting on an incredible journey and the views that kept you going.
