Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Hanoi to Mai Chau

You'll head out from Hanoi on your motorbike, leaving the city chaos behind as you take narrow country roads toward Mai Chau. The ride gets better once you hit French Road No. 6, which runs alongside the Black River with views that feel similar to Ha Long Bay. After lunch, you'll cross through Thung Khe Pass and descend into the mountain valley where White Thai communities live in traditional stilt houses. It's a full day of riding but the scenery changes constantly as you go higher.

  2. Day 2

    Mai Chau to Phu Yen

You have the option to take an easy walk through a local village or just relax with coffee before leaving Mai Chau. The roads heading out are straightforward with mountain views, and you'll want to stop for photos. From there, it's toward Moc Chau, passing through Hua Tat Pass where you'll grab lunch. After lunch, you'll take the quieter Road 43 toward the Da River, then cross the Da River reservoir by ferry before the final stretch on winding roads into Phu Yen for the night.

  3. Day 3

    Phu Yen to Sapa

Get an early start crossing Lung Lo Pass, which was a critical supply route during the First Indochina War and is now a national heritage site. You'll head up Road 32 and then into the Mu Cang Chai massif, which sits almost as high as Fansipan mountain. The ride through here is tough but worth it for the views you get from the top, some of the best in northern Vietnam.

    Meals
    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Included Activities

    • Motorcycle ride across Lung Lo Pass
    • Motorcycle ride through Mu Cang Chai massif

  4. Day 4

    Sapa

The day routes toward Fansipan Mountain, and there's an optional challenging back route if you want river crossings included. The main route takes you on a serious climb from Binh Lu to Tram Ton Pass, Vietnam's highest road pass at over 2,000 meters. The views span the entire main mountain range. After reaching the top, you'll descend into Sa Pa valley, which is rugged and culturally diverse, with the added history of being Vietnam's former French summer retreat in the north.

    Meals
    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Included Activities

  5. Day 5

    Sapa to Thac Ba Lake

You'll ride for half the day to reach Vu Linh, a Dao village beside Thac Ba Lake, Vietnam's largest man-made lake. After lunch, you get on a boat and stop at different islands to swim and watch how locals use paddle boats for daily life. The boat trip also gives you chances to spot wildlife around the thousands of islands scattered across the lake. Dinner happens with the village hosts, who throw celebratory meals that are known for being spirited and welcoming.

    Meals
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner (Dinner with Dao hosts)

    Included Activities

Tan Trao Historic Site is where the National Congress took place in 1945, leading to the August Revolution and Ho Chi Minh's selection as head of the temporary government. From there, Cho Chu Monuments prison shows the sacrifice of revolutionary figures. The roads afterward take you through Ba Be National Park and into Bac Ngoi village, where you'll stay at a family-run home-stay right on Ba Be Lake's shore.

Ba Be itself is a freshwater karst lake with diverse wildlife, rare species, and caves, plus ethnic minority communities like Tay, Nung, Dao, and Mong people. From there, you ride back toward Hanoi on Road 3, and you'll want to time it to avoid the worst rush hour traffic coming into the city.

  • Mighty Vietnam Offroad Motorbike Tour via Mai Chau, Sapa, Ba Be Lake, Mu Cang Chai reviewer 1
    · June 30th, 2025
A true motorbike journey through culture and nature. We've come back to Viet Long Travel again and again for a reason—they know how to deliver unforgettable travel experiences. This 7-day offroad motorbike tour was hands-down the best way to explore the rugged north of Vietnam. Every stop—from the stilt houses in Mai Chau to the terraced fields of Mu Cang Chai and the serenity of Ba Be Lake—felt special and thoughtfully chosen. The offroad sections were fun and a bit challenging, but nothing our group couldn’t handle. The bikes were in great condition, and the guide was skilled, friendly, and deeply knowledgeable about the regions we passed through. We returned with sore muscles, full hearts, and countless stories to tell. Can't wait for the next ride with Viet Long!
