Itinerary
- Day 1
Arusha to Miriakamba Hut
You'll start with a 1.5-hour drive from Arusha to Momella Gate where you'll handle entry procedures and begin your Mount Meru trek. From there, the trail takes you through scenic routes with views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the Momella lakes stretching out around you. The 6km hike climbs from 1500m to 2500m over 4-5 hours, and you should watch for bushbucks, cape buffaloes, giraffes, and warthogs along the way. By evening you'll reach Miriakamba hut where you'll spend the night at elevation.

Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut
This morning you'll trek along a steep ridge with the Meru crater, ash cone, and little Meru visible ahead. Cape buffaloes and black and white colobus monkeys show up regularly on this section. The 4-5 hour hike brings you to Saddle hut at 3500m, and after settling in, you'll do a short acclimatization trek up to little Meru at 3810m before heading back to base camp to rest.

Landmarks Meru Crater Little Meru Saddle Hut - Day 3
Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak to Miriakamba Hut
You'll wake after midnight for a light meal, then tackle the trek's hardest part, a steep push to Socialist Peak at 4562m through gravel and rocky terrain. The 10-12 hour day covers 19km total. At the summit you'll see the Meru Crater and ash cone spread below, and if you're lucky you might spot mountain reedbucks and klipspringers. After taking in the views, you'll descend back to Miriakamba hut.

Miriakamba Hut to Arusha
After breakfast, you'll make the final descent from Miriakamba hut down to Momella Gate, dropping from 2500m to 1500m over 14km and 4-5 hours. The route takes you through the Fig tree Arch on the southern side. Once you reach Momella Gate, your vehicle will be waiting for the 1.5-hour drive back to your hotel in Arusha.
