- MUMonika· May 19th, 2025Just back from yet another fabulous trip with Odynovo! We spent three weeks in China and the Philippines and still feel like we have only scratched the surface… While some of our trip was self-booked (some hotels, Philippines stay), anything entrusted to Odynovo – accommodation, internal flights/trains, guides/drivers – worked like absolute clockwork, as always! Our guide Alice (and of course, Mr Wang) in Beijing was brilliant and safely navigated us around the stunning sights (and crowds) in the city; she was also fantastic company on a long (and misty) day exploring the Great Wall at Jinshanling and then Simatai (for the lit-up wall/water-town experience in the evening) and helped us organise a lovely birthday dinner for my husband at a traditional restaurant. After just over four hours on the 350km/h bullet train (the empty ghost cities along the way are an eerie sight) we arrived safely in Xi’an and just loved exploring the old city and Muslim quarter. To be honest, we wish we had spent more time there and cycled on the city walls rather than spend an evening fighting the crowds at the Disney-style Tang Dynasty mall… However, nothing could prepare us for the sheer scale and magnificence of the Terracotta warrior site. It is truly difficult to grasp that the unearthed exhibits are only a tiny fraction of what archaeologists know to still rest underground… mind-blowing! We then took a flight to Lijiang in Yunnan Province and absolutely fell in love with the stunning mountain scenery, picturesque ancient towns and lovely people, many of whom members of ethnic minority communities. Three of the kindest, loveliest of them all were our guides Martin (Lijiang), Jackson (Shangri-La) and Sally (Dali). And our brilliant driver, Mr Liu, who stayed with us for the whole Yunnan trip! I nearly gave Sally a heart attack when I left my handbag (containing our passports, money and credit cards) in a public bathroom in Shaxi only to wonder a couple of hours later why I was travelling so light… Sally admirably kept her nerve, walked us back to said bathroom, questioned numerous septuagenarian shopkeepers and quickly identified a lady responsible for public bathroom maintenance who had duly found my bag and kept it safe! She also plied me with large quantities of home-made ginger tea to combat my cold and is to me the epitome of “wonder-woman”! To avoid the May Day holiday in China, we then spent several days relaxing on a beautiful private island in the Philippines (self-organised). On our way back we spent overnight in Manila where Joe treated us to a very interesting tour of the old city (not to mention the best coffee and cheesecake ever tasted!) Our final stop was Shanghai, which is a fascinating city with a very different vibe from other places in mainland China. Despite some of our sightseeing programme being wiped out by a mini-typhoon, our guide Run couldn’t have been better company, treating us to some fascinating retail therapy (I never realised that tea-tasting with Madame Susan could be the equivalent of spending an hour’s wine-tasting with a top sommelier!) and an unplanned trip to the amazing Shanghai museum. He and our driver then went out of their way to let us see the Bund at night as we had missed out on the walk/boat-trip on the river, before taking us back to the airport for our flight home. All in all, this trip has thoroughly whetted our appetite for further China trips, the organisation of which we would happily entrust to Odynovo again! Thank you to all our guides and drivers and to Ander Zhou for the seamless organisation!Show moreOdynovo commented on this reviewDear Monika Unsworth, Thank you for taking the time to write a positive review and for your recognition of Ander, the guides!
