Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Arrival at Kilimanjaro

Your driver meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and drives you to Lindrin Lodge in Moshi. Once you've settled into your room, your lead guide gathers the group for a briefing about the trek ahead, covering what the next week will look like and what you should prepare for physically.

    Start point
Arusha, Tanzania (Kilimanjaro International Airport )
    Meals
    Breakfast, Dinner

  2. Day 2

Londorossi Park Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Registration happens at Londorossi Park Gate before you're driven about an hour to Lemosho Gate, where your actual trek begins. From the gate, you'll hike for roughly three hours through the forest, gaining elevation as you go. Mti Mkubwa Camp sits at 2,895 metres (9,498 feet) and becomes your first night under canvas, which feels pretty surreal after being in town just hours before.

    Meals
    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Included Activities

    • Hike from Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp (3 hours)
    Landmarks

    Lemosho Gate
    Mti Mkubwa Camp
  3. Day 3

Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

After eating early, you'll leave the rainforest behind and move into the heather and moorland zone. The path crosses multiple streams as it climbs toward Shira 1 Camp at 3,505 metres (11,499 feet). This five to six hour day is one of the trek's best for scenery, so you'll want to pace yourself and take in the landscape as you go.

    Meals
    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Included Activities

    • Hike from Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp through rainforest and moorland (5-6 hours)
    Landmarks
    Shira 1 Camp
  4. Day 4

Shira 1 Camp to Moir Hut

The Shira Plateau stretches out in front of you with the Western Breach and glaciers visible throughout the day. You'll spot giant lobelias and senecios along the trail, plus other alpine vegetation that feels pretty alien at this elevation. The hike to Moir Hut takes six to seven hours and ends at 4,206 metres (13,796 feet).

    Meals
    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Included Activities

    • Hike along Shira Plateau to Moir Hut (6-7 hours)
    Landmarks
    Shira Plateau
    Western Breach
    Moir Hut
  5. Day 5

    Moir Hut to Barranco Camp

After breakfast, you'll climb to Lava Tower at 4,630 metres (15,190 feet) where lunch happens, then you'll drop down to Barranco Camp at 3,967 metres (13,012 feet). This 'climb high, sleep low' approach helps your body adjust to the altitude. The day involves six to nine hours of walking depending on your pace and rest breaks.

    Meals
Breakfast, Lunch (at Lava Tower), Dinner

    Included Activities

    • Hike to Lava Tower (4,630 m) and descent to Barranco Camp (6-9 hours)
    Landmarks
    Lava Tower
    Barranco Camp
    Barranco Wall
  6. Day 6

    Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

You'll tackle the Barranco Wall after an early meal, a steep rock face that looks much harder than it actually is to climb. Once you're up top, you'll break through the clouds with incredible views of the southern ice fields and the summit in the distance. Karanga Camp is four to five hours away, so you'll arrive with time to rest before dinner.

    Meals
    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Included Activities

    • Climb Barranco Wall and hike to Karanga Camp (4-5 hours)
    Landmarks
    Barranco Wall
    Karanga Camp
  7. Day 7

    Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

The three-hour hike to Barafu Camp at 4,600 metres (15,092 feet) keeps showing you those big mountain views and signals you're getting close to the top. You'll head to bed early tonight since the summit push starts at midnight. The timing lets you see sunrise from high altitude and spreads the long trek across the day and early morning hours.

    Meals
    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Included Activities

    • Hike from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (3 hours)
    Landmarks
    Barafu Camp
  8. Day 8

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

The summit day starts in darkness. You'll climb for six to eight hours in the cold to reach Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres (19,341 feet), standing at Africa's highest point next to the iconic sign. After photos and celebration, you'll spend another six to eight hours descending to Mweka Camp at 3,068 metres (10,066 feet). It's a long, challenging day but the payoff is everything.

    Meals
    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Included Activities

    • Pre-dawn climb to Uhuru Peak (6-8 hours)
    • Descent to Mweka Camp (6-8 hours)
    Landmarks
    Uhuru Peak
    Mweka Camp
  9. Day 9

    Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

The final three hours take you back down through the rainforest to Mweka Gate at 1,640 metres (5,381 feet). Your driver is waiting to collect you, and the group celebrates with a tipping ceremony for the guides and porters. Cold beers and stories come next, then you'll head back to Lindrin Lodge for a proper shower and sleep in an actual bed.

    Meals
    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Included Activities

    • Final hike through rainforest to Mweka Gate (3 hours)

  10. Day 10

    Departure from Kilimanjaro

It's time to leave Kilimanjaro behind. Your driver either takes you to the airport if you're heading out of Tanzania or over to Zanzibar for beach time, or you both head west together if you're continuing on to a safari to see wildlife like lions, elephants, and the full African experience.

    End point
Arusha, Tanzania (Kilimanjaro International Airport )

    Optional Activities

I travelled to Kilimanjaro with Follow Alice in 2020 and when I say that absolutely EVERY single detail was covered, I mean it! From the moment I arrived and was warmly welcomed by our lead guide Chris, till the moment I left, my experience was just magical! One thing that really struck me was just much work goes into a Kilimanjaro climb and how incredibly organised the team in Tanzania are. They made it look so easy and simple but it is anything but that. Another thing that I felt was really unique, was just how much the team LOVE being a part of Follow Alice. They are so proud and passionate and I think that says a lot about the company as a whole. All in all, I would 100% recommend Follow Alice to anybody looking for a reliable, sustainable and all-round amazing tour operator!
