Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Bucharest to Brasov

Leave Bucharest this morning and drive to Sinaia, a mountain resort town about two hours north. You'll start at Peles Castle, which served as the summer home for Romania's royal family and has some really ornate rooms and grounds worth walking through. After lunch, head to Bran Castle, the fortress that inspired many Dracula stories, then spend time in the town of Bran itself where there's a local market to check out. Later in the afternoon, continue to Brasov, a medieval city with a lot of character. Take a walking tour through the town center to see the old architecture and learn about the area's history before settling into your hotel.

    • Visit Bran Castle (Dracula's Castle)
    • Explore Bran town and local market

    Brasov to Sighisoara

Start the day driving to Viscri, a small Saxon village with a fortified church that's recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You'll have lunch with locals there and get a real sense of traditional Romanian hospitality and food. From there, it's about an hour's drive to Sighisoara, the medieval city where Vlad the Impaler was born. Spend the afternoon on a walking tour of the old citadel and historic center, checking out the narrow streets and period buildings. You'll check in at your hotel in Sighisoara by evening.

Then drive about 30 minutes to Biertan, another UNESCO World Heritage Site that has a really impressive fortified church from the 15th century. After that, continue on to Sibiu, roughly 45 minutes away, a medieval city where you'll see a mix of Romanian and German influences in the architecture and culture. The historic center has a lot to wander through, and you can explore the old squares and buildings before checking in at your hotel there for the night.

    Sibiu to Bucharest

This morning you'll drive the Transfagarasan Road, one of Europe's most dramatic mountain routes with sharp curves and high elevation. Make a stop at Balea Lake to take in the scenery and maybe grab some photos. Later, visit Poenari Fortress, the actual historical fortress where Vlad the Impaler held power, which sits on a cliff above the river. Then head to Curtea de Arges to see the historic monastery there, which has some important religious architecture.
