Itinerary
- Day 1
Basarbovo - Veliko Tarnovo - Arbanasi
Start your morning at Basarabovo Monastery, where you'll see stone-carved chapels built right into the cliff face about 30 meters up. The carved structures are something you won't find everywhere, so take time to walk around and look at the details. From there, head to Veliko Tarnovo, the old capital of the Bulgarian Empire. You'll spend your afternoon walking through narrow streets lined with historic houses, and then climb up to Tsarevets Fortress for views over the town. Later, make your way to Arbanasi Village, which is on the UNESCO list as an open-air museum. The stone houses here each have their own character with thick defensive walls and wooden frames, and wandering through the village shows you how people lived in this region centuries ago.
