Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Hanoi

You'll arrive in Hanoi and head to your hotel for check-in at 2:00 PM. The rest of the afternoon and evening are yours to get settled, grab a bite whenever you're hungry, and take a walk around the neighborhood if you feel like it. It's a good time to get your bearings and adjust to the city.

  2. Day 2

    Hanoi

Start your morning in Hanoi by checking out Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum and his former home, then head over to the Temple of Literature to see one of Vietnam's oldest educational institutions. The One Pillar Pagoda is next, and it's worth the short trip to see this unique structure. After grabbing lunch somewhere in the old quarter, take a rickshaw ride through the narrow streets and alleyways around Hoan Kiem Lake to get a real feel for how locals move through this part of the city. Before dinner, swing by Ngoc Son Temple sitting on a small island in the lake. Cap off the evening with a water puppet theater performance, a traditional art form that's been around for centuries.

Head out early for the drive to Halong Bay, traveling through the Red River Delta's rice fields on the new highway. Once you arrive, board a traditional junk boat and spend the day cruising through the waters with limestone karsts rising up around you. Lunch and dinner both feature fresh seafood caught locally, and you'll have time to relax on deck between meals. By evening you'll settle in for the night on the boat, falling asleep to the sound of water and the sight of the islands silhouetted against the sky.

Back in the imperial city, walk through the legendary Imperial Palace and explore the walled grounds where emperors once ruled. Grab lunch at one of the local spots, then check out Trang Tien Bridge and the busy Dong Ba Market to see how locals shop and sell their goods. In the afternoon, visit a few of Hue's royal tombs scattered around the region. Later, head toward Hoi An with a stop at Cloud Pass (496 meters high) where you can watch the sun set over the shift from subtropical north to tropical south Vietnam. The round trip through Vietnam was successful all around. We also learned a lot about the history of the country. Unfortunately, Vietnam is very dirty, which clouds the whole experience a little, but the tour operator can't help that.

The round trip was good so far, too many temples and not enough typical features of the country, such as the original population in the countryside. Due to a practically non-existent beach, the "bathing hotel" does not deserve this name. There are much nicer beaches in Jimnaran or Sanur.

We had a wonderful trip. It was very exhausting and we had to get up early every day, but it was always worth it. So many highlights. Very well organized. Everything worked out. I just wish I had known beforehand that cash is important for optional excursions and tips.
