Itinerary
- Day 1
Frankfurt to San Jose
Your flight from Frankfurt gets you into San Jose, where someone's waiting to pick you up at the airport. The drive to your hotel in the city takes a bit, and once you're checked in, you'll have the evening to yourself to settle in and get some rest after traveling.
- Day 2
San Jose to Puerto Viejo de Talamanca
Early morning drive from San Jose takes you through Braulio Carrillo National Park, also called the Green Corridor. The scenery shifts as you head toward the Caribbean coast, and by afternoon you're in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. This laid-back town sits right by the water with palm-lined beaches and a strong Afro-Caribbean vibe. You can kick back with a drink or walk along the beach if you feel like it.

- Day 3
Puerto Viejo de Talamanca
Cahuita National Park is just nearby, and you'll head there in the morning. The park's interesting because the local community works together with Costa Rican officials to run it sustainably. Walking the beach here means moving through a forest ecosystem where you'll spot howler monkeys, coatis, sloths, and iguanas if you're lucky, plus various birds. After lunch, the afternoon is yours to relax back at your hotel or around town.

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca to Tortuguero
You'll start early and drive through banana plantations heading toward Tortuguero National Park. Your guide explains how the banana cultivation actually works. Once you reach La Pavona or Cano Blanco, the transportation switches to boats. From there, you navigate through jungle canals to get to Tortuguero. In the afternoon, you explore the village itself and chat with locals about what life is like there.

Tortuguero
A boat trip through the side canals of Tortuguero gives you chances to spot caimans, monkeys, toucans, and other wildlife throughout the day. June through October is sea turtle nesting season, making this one of the most important spots for that. Back at the lodge, you have free time to check out the butterfly garden or hike along the natural beach.

- Day 6
Tortuguero to Irazu Volcano Region
After breakfast, the boat takes you back to Pavona or Cano Blanco with a stop for traditional lunch along the way. From there, you drive toward the Irazu volcano region. Your hotel here actually has a sustainable farm on the grounds, so you can visit the vegetable garden and see the animals. There are horses and hiking trails if you want to get outside and explore.

- Day 7
Irazu Region to San Gerardo de Dota
The morning is yours to do whatever you like. Around midday, you head out toward San Gerardo de Dota, which sits at higher elevation where it's cooler and mist covers the mountains. The tropical cloud forest here is where you find rare birds like the quetzal, the bird the Mayans considered sacred.

- Day 8
San Gerardo de Dota
Morning hikes through the private reserve take you along winding trails past giant trees draped in lichen and moss. Your guide knows where to look for quetzals, hummingbirds, tanagers, and you'll see orchids and bromeliads too. The afternoon is free, so you can rest at the lodge or wander around on your own.

San Gerardo de Dota to Dominical
After breakfast, the drive heads toward the Pacific coast and Dominical. You'll check into your hotel by afternoon and have the evening to get settled and explore the town if you want.

Dominical
Marino Ballena National Park protects a coastal strip where you can learn about the mangrove ecosystem. The park is known for a whale fin shaped section of coastline that shows up at low tide. Depending on the season (July to October), you might spot humpback whales or dolphins. The hike includes beach time before you head back to the hotel.

- Day 11
Dominical to Arenal Volcano
After breakfast, you continue north along the coast to Carara National Park, famous for its bright red macaws and easy spotting of crocodiles. From there, you move into the northern lowlands toward Arenal volcano. This area is surrounded by primary cloud forest, rainforest, rivers, waterfalls, and thermal springs.

- Day 12
Arenal
The morning takes you to Catarata de La Fortuna waterfall, which drops 70 meters into the rainforest. Wearing sturdy shoes, you climb down into the gorge for a close look and can cool off in the pools. Later, you walk on suspension bridges high in the canopy of massive trees, getting unusual views of Arenal volcano and the reservoir. Keep an eye out for jungle animals, then finish the day soaking in eco-thermal springs before dinner.

Arenal to San Jose
The drive back to the Central Valley and San Jose airport takes most of the day. Your flight back to Germany departs in the evening or later, depending on the schedule.

Arrival in Germany
You arrive at the airport in Germany, ending your Costa Rica tour and heading home with plenty of memories.
