Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Biar

You arrive in Biar and find yourself in a town defined by its impressive 12th-century castle perched overhead. Spend time walking through the old town, checking out the churches and navigating the narrow streets and squares. Grab lunch or dinner at one of the local bars and restaurants to try some regional specialties, which is really where you get a feel for what people eat around here.

    Optional Activities

    • Explore the 12th-century castle
    • Stroll through the old town with its churches and squares
    • Taste typical regional dishes at local bars and restaurants
    Landmarks/POIs
    Biar Castle
  2. Day 2

    Banyeres de Mariola to Bocairent

Today you're cycling alongside the Vinalopó River on a path that follows an old railroad line. You'll pass through orchards and small villages as you make your way to Banyeres de Mariola. There are two route options: one keeps to relatively flat ground and runs along the edge of Sierra de Mariola Natural Park, while the other takes you through the park itself with some climbing and better views. Either way, you finish in Bocairent, a medieval village where you'll stay for the night (about 35-45 km depending on your choice).

  3. Day 3

    Bocairent

After breakfast, you can either spend the morning and early afternoon exploring Bocairent's medieval quarter at your own pace, or take a cycling route through La Valleta d'Agres if you want to keep moving. The cycling option follows quiet country roads through orchards at the base of Sierra de Mariola, passing through Alfafara and Agres, two villages that each have their own character and appeal.

    Meals
    Breakfast

  4. Day 4

    Fontanars dels Alforins

You're cycling on small roads today, moving through grain fields, olive groves, and vineyards toward Fontanars dels Alforins. Along the way, you'll come across old manor houses that have been converted into wineries or shops selling handmade goods. There's an opportunity to do some wine tasting here, so if that interests you, plan to spend some time sampling what's available (about 25-30 km).

You'll ride past Ontinyent and its historic old town, then cross near the Bellús reservoir. After that, you follow a really nice gorge beside the River Albaida as you head toward Xàtiva, a historic town where you'll notice its impressive castle on the hillside long before you arrive (about 40-50 km).

You'll cycle on quiet paths through orange groves, then switch to following an old pilgrimage route that connects monasteries. Stop by Simat de la Valldigna, and from there you'll cycle through rice fields heading toward Cullera, a coastal town where you can see the sea and eat typical rice dishes. If the weather cooperates, there's time to spend on the beaches (about 45-55 km).

The hikes were very well selected and organized. Even if you were not quite free from giddiness and could not go on a tour, our hiking guide Jorge always found an alternative, where you eventually met up with the group again. Jorge knew the island very well and could tell us a lot about its history and vegetation. He guided us safely and with prudence. Afterwards we always had lunch together, typical for the country and very tasty. Our hotel was centrally located and was pleasant and clean for the purpose of staying overnight. Only the pickup from the airport could be improved. We had to make several calls and wait over an hour until the bus driver finally picked us up and took us to the ferry. Apparently there was a staffing problem. Surely this can be better organized. Other than that, it was a very nice week of hiking.
