Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Jackson Hole to Cliff Creek

You'll take a 1.5-hour shuttle from Jackson Hole to a remote trailhead in the Wyoming Range, then hike 7 miles up a pristine valley to Cliff Creek camp while gaining 600 feet. Once you've set up camp, there's time to wander around and check things out. You could hike toward the second waterfall for views, look for wildlife, or just relax by the fire near Cliff Creek Falls.

    Cliff Creek Pass

After breakfast in the backcountry, you'll break camp and head onto less-traveled trails with the pack llamas. The hike covers 5 miles with 950 feet elevation gain as you reach Cliff Creek Pass. You'll walk through high mountain meadows where you can see the Gros Ventre range, the Wind Rivers with their granite spires and glaciers, and occasional glimpses of the Tetons from a perspective most people never get to experience.

You'll walk through little-used trails in Horse Haven Meadows with chances to climb several mountain passes. You can see Wyoming Range peaks like Grayback Ridge and Clause Peak along the way. After hiking 4 miles with 500 feet elevation gain and 750 feet of descent, you'll end the day in a meadow above Cliff Creek Falls, which is a double waterfall dropping over 200 feet.

The route goes 10 miles with 2,450 feet elevation gain and 2,450 feet descent. You'll pass through Bare Hole, actually a high alpine valley with 360-degree mountain views. Grab lunch on a ridge, watch for wildlife, and potentially try for the summit if the group is interested. Tonight is a celebratory final dinner in the wilderness where you can take in the starry sky and sounds of Cliff Creek.

You'll pass towering cliffs with colorful rock in reds and tans, and might spot lingering snow patches on the hillsides. After reaching the trailhead, the 1.5-hour shuttle takes you back to Jackson Hole for showers and hotel rooms.
