Itinerary
- Day 1
Salzburg
You'll arrive in Salzburg and collect your rental bike to start getting oriented. Walking through Getreidegasse gives you a feel for the old town's narrow streets and shops, while Residence Square shows off the city's grander architecture. This sets you up nicely before the cycling kicks off tomorrow.

Salzburg to Mondsee
Your first cycling day follows the Salzach river, then you'll pick up the old Ischler railway route through meadows toward Thalgau. The dragon wall rock formation comes into view as you continue along the lake path to Mondsee, which you might recognize from The Sound of Music. It's a scenic introduction to the region.

Mondsee to Traunkirchen
Riding from Lake Mondsee to Lake Attersee, you'll notice the striking deep green water that makes it distinctive. Depending on your arrival timing (July and August only), you can take a boat or cycle the lakeshore to Weyregg. After cycling through Aurachtal Valley, you'll reach Traunkirchen by way of Lake Traunsee, passing Gmunden with its notable Ort Castle.

Traunkirchen to Hallstatt
Starting along Lake Traun toward Ebensee, you'll follow the Traun river into Bad Ischl, a town with imperial history. The route continues through Bad Goisern and down to Lake Hallstatt. Cycling along the shoreline brings you to Hallstatt itself, where you're staying right in the center of this famous lakeside village.

Hallstatt to St. Wolfgang
Cycling back toward Bad Ischl, make time for Café Zauner to try their sweet Gugelhupf, the same pastry Emperor Franz Josef and his wife Sissi once enjoyed there. From there, continue on to Lake Wolfgangsee and the area around the well-known White Horse Inn, which has its own cultural significance in the region.

St. Wolfgang
This is your flexible day at Lake Wolfgangsee. If you're feeling active, the cog railway takes you up Schafberg (1,782 m/5,846 ft) for wide views across the region. You could also take a boat out on the water or simply spend the afternoon swimming in the clear lake if that appeals more.

St. Wolfgang to Salzburg
From St. Gilgen, you'll hike for about an hour to Tiefbrunnau while your bike gets transported ahead. Back on the bike, the route goes through Hintersee and into Strubklamm, then down through Wiestal valley. The Glasenbach Gorge presents dramatic scenery before you drop into Salzach Valley and visit Hellbrunn Palace before returning to Salzburg.

After breakfast, your cycling tour wraps up. You'll head back to Salzburg and arrange your own return travel from there. It's time to reflect on the lakes and valleys you've covered over the past week.
