I recently went on the TruTravels 17 day Philippines Island Hopping Tour. While the Philippines and its people were extraordinary, my experience with TruTravels was devastating. What became clear on this tour is that the local guides are paid shockingly little — around 1,500 pesos per day (less than £20) — despite tourists paying premium prices. Many of them have second jobs just to support themselves and their families. This exploitation had tragic consequences. Our tour guide became ill and was so afraid of losing her job — due to a company policy where scores below 8/10 can lead to serious disciplinary action or dismissal — that she didn’t tell the company or seek proper medical help. When the company was finally alerted by us, she was admitted to hospital but discharged herself prematurely, reportedly out of fear she’d lose her job or be forced to pay her own way home. She later passed away. Her death was preventable. It was the direct result of a system that puts immense pressure on underpaid local staff and leaves them feeling disposable. To make matters worse, TruTravels had her close colleagues — grieving and still expected to work — deliver the news to us, reading from a script. They withheld the truth for two days to keep the tour going, and even other guides weren’t told immediately. Accommodation was another area of concern. Despite the high cost of the tour, many hotels were unsafe or unhygienic. There were reports of bed bugs, black mould, and, in one instance at the El Nido Hotel Coral Cliffs, a member of our group had money stolen. Out of concern for my own wellbeing, I had to arrange my own accommodation at that location. Throughout the trip, it was also clear how tightly controlled the guides are. They’re required to take photos every time we boarded transport, arrived at a new hotel, or reached a destination — supposedly for “safety” reasons. In practice, it felt incredibly micromanaging, as though the company doesn’t trust its own employees. As paying adults on what should have been an enjoyable experience, it felt infantilising and unlike anything I’ve experienced with other global tour companies. If we didn’t comply to having multiple photos taken a day it felt like there would be fall out. Ridiculous as paying customers on holiday. Please, by all means, visit the Philippines. But do not give your money to TruTravels or its parent company, G Adventures, until they can demonstrate that they pay their staff fairly, provide proper sick leave and medical cover, and ensure no one’s livelihood depends on customer scores. This was not just a disappointing trip — it was a traumatic experience that cost a woman her life. Everything shared here comes directly from my own experience and from what our guides told us during the tour. Despite repeated requests for transparency, TruTravels has refused to answer our questions, citing they are “not in a position to share internal or personnel details.” They are apparently undergoing a review of the tour but are yet to share any details. The only compensation offered thus far has been a refund of the 4 days of the end of the tour missed, once we found out about her death, and only if we decided to return home early.

I just completed the 17-day Island Hopping Adventure with TruTravels, and I can't say enough good things about our tour leader, Vanezza. From day one, she brought incredible energy, positivity, and organisation to the trip, making sure everyone felt welcome, safe, and involved. Her local knowledge and experience meant we never missed a hidden gem or a photo-worthy moment, and she was always ready with recommendations, fun facts, and the occasional hilarious story. She handled every detail with professionalism, from ferry schedules to accommodation. You could tell she genuinely cared about everyone having the best time possible. Thanks to Vanezza, the trip was not just a holiday, but a true adventure filled with unforgettable memories. If you’re lucky enough to have her as your leader, you’re in for something special. 10/10 – would book again just to travel with her!

Vanezza was absolutely incredible for the whole tour! She was always fun, entertaining, informative and made the effort to ensure that everyone was included throughout the 17 days! Whilst Vanezza was a bundle of joy, she was also really kind and approachable - any questions or issues I was having, I knew I could go to her about it and she would treat it with empathy and professionalism. I feel like Vanezza really emulates the spirit of the trutravels tours and you are very lucky to have her as a guide for the Philippines destination! All my expectations were definitely surpassed and I went from being slightly nervous about solo travelling to feeling so welcomed and part of a family! I would jump at the chance of doing another tour if Vanezza was the guide as I enjoyed every minute!!

She is such a happy, funny, friendly, helpful and knowledgeable person - always a friend to everyone, always there to help you in anyway she could. She is an amazing, incredible woman, and I hope I get the honour of seeing her again in the future! Thankyou so so much Vanezza!!!

I have done a few tru travels tours now but this 17 day island tour would have to be my favourite. The itinerary is very well planned and I felt we had the perfect amount of time in each location. The tour even includes a few location which I never would have considered if I was planning this trip solo but were amazing to see. The activities are very varied and were a great way to get the most out of each location. Vanessa was an outstanding guide and was able to answer most of our questions and accommodate any needs we had. She felt like a mum for the trip which was so lovely when being far from home. Most of the restaurants were very well selected and had lots of great options and catered for our dietary requirements.

I honestly had the most incredible experience on my TruTravels tour in the Philippines! From the moment the trip started, everything was super well-organized, and the itinerary was the perfect mix of adventure, culture, and time to relax. There were so many highlights, from island hopping through unbelievably clear waters, snorkelling with amazing marine life, canyoneering in Moalboal, to visiting a dog sanctuary and experiencing stunning sunsets on the beach! It really had such a great variety of activities! One of the best parts of the whole trip was the people, including our amazing guide, Vanezza. She brought such good energy to the group, always keeping the vibe fun and positive, while also being super knowledgeable and on top of everything behind the scenes. You could tell she genuinely cared about making sure everyone was having a good time. Whether it was helping us plan our free time, sharing local tips, or just being a great laugh, she made a huge difference to the whole experience. I honestly can’t imagine the trip without her! I finished the trip with amazing memories, new friends, and a serious love for the Philippines. Massive thanks again to the team, and especially to Vanezza for making it so special!

Vanezza was a great tour guide and you can tell from day 1 she is so passionate about what she does! She was super socialable, approachable and warm. I really appreciated having her as a guide. You can really tell she wants the best for the group and us all to be having the time of our lives. She had great knowledge on local areas, culture and food which enhanced our experiences. I really don’t believe I would have had as good of a trip if I had to organise it all myself, the convenience of a local guide was much appreciated.

Vanezza was the most amazing tour guide, she said from the start she would treat us as her children and she did exactly that while still being like a best friend. I always felt like I was safe and included in the fun. I couldn’t have asked for better and everything was always so well organised so there wasn’t any waiting around.

We are a family of 2 adults and 4 children (19, 18, 16, 12). We like the look on your itinerary but would like to add a few more nights in each stop to slow the pace down a little bit. Can we do this tour as a private group with just us? What is the cost and accommodation? We would like to do it in mid December if possible.
