Itinerary
- Day 1
Machame Gate to Machame Camp
You'll get picked up at 8:30 am for the drive to Machame Gate. Once park fees are handled, you'll enter the rainforest at Kilimanjaro's lower reaches. The trail is gradual with plenty of spots for photos as light filters through the trees, and you might spot black and white colobus monkeys along the way. Before dinner at Machame Camp, hot water will be available for cleaning up.

- Day 2
Machame Camp to Shira Camp
After breakfast you'll break camp and start ascending through various ridges covered in scrubby lowland bush. The landscape shifts to hardy alpine flora as you reach the open plateau. This section takes 5 to 6.5 hours with a picnic lunch break included. Kilimanjaro towers overhead the whole time, and you'll catch Mount Meru in the distance as altitude increases.

Shira Camp to Baranco Camp
From camp you'll make a gradual climb through low alpine bush where bird watching is excellent, particularly for raptors hunting the scrub. Red moraine fields appear as you get closer to Lava Tower at 4,630 meters, then you descend toward Baranco Camp. Lunch happens along the route. The full walk runs 5 to 7 hours, making this a solid acclimatization day before higher elevations.

Baranco Camp to Karanga Camp
The steep Baranco Wall is your first challenge after breakfast, though it's less intimidating than it looks. From there you continue steadily to Karanga Camp. Hot lunch arrives shortly after you settle in, and then you can either rest at camp or take an optional side walk if your guide thinks it's a good idea.

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
You'll trek around the south side of the mountain through alpine desert and moraine fields. Barafu Camp comes into view after 4.5 to 6 hours. Spend the afternoon soaking in the views and trying to rest up. Around midnight you'll be woken for the final push to the summit.

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
The midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak begins after you gear up. Africa's highest point sits at 5,895 meters, so have your camera ready for sunrise at the top. After celebrating, you'll head back down to Barafu Camp for breakfast and a quick rest. Then it's a longer descent through lowland grasses and scrub with a picnic lunch break, finishing at either Mweka Camp or Millennium Camp depending on your pace and condition.

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
After breakfast you'll descend back into the forest for a nice walk with good bird watching and scenic views toward the valley. From there you continue down to Mweka Gate where champagne brunch is waiting. Your vehicle meets you there for the drive back to the lodge in Moshi, where hot showers and well-earned rest are finally yours.
