The long (all day) bus ride from Chengdu to Leshan for a short 20-minute boat ride to see the Buddha cliff was a wasted day. We would have preferred visiting the scenic rice terraces nearby. Datong has much more interesting Buddha caves and is also a scenic historic city. Consider including Datong in some of your itineraries.

We had a wonderful group and a great tour leader (Leon) which made the trip memorable. It was amazing all we got to see in this 19 day China trip. Each day was packed with new places to visit even when the weather was down. I had so many favorite spots so it’s hard to select a few.. panda research center, top of the world/tea plantation, Watertown (even with commercialization fun to see all the costume wearers), Bund & tallest building in Shanghai, summer temple in Beijing and of course Xi’an terra cotta warriors. The food was great overall and we quickly burned off the calories by walking an average of 3-6 miles/day. We took local buses &subways, an overnight train (comfortable), coaches, boats, fast trains, and plane. As noted before keep your luggage slim as you will be moving it quite a bit. My only negative was taking the subway during rush hour once - we were packed like sardines. Local buses were fine. The optional tours were great ( especially the performances) but take more cash then noted in the the notes as they add up. There were ATMs in the big cities so getting access was no big deal. We had to pay cash for each event and meal and it may have been easier if we could use a credit card or add to the tab as I have in the past with other companies. The accommodations overall were quite good. In a few places we had minor issues like sticky doors, no views out the window but these were minor. Except once we stayed 2-3 days in each place which was nice. Leon did a great job of selecting places to visit and when we added a request he would include it. He was incredibly responsive to all our needs. I had special dietary needs and he made sure food selections could accommodate me so I didn’t get ill. He personalized his talks when we visited each place and we learned a lot about Chinese culture from him. We gave him a standing ovation at our last dinner which he richly deserved. Although I usually go on more nature oriented tours, this people-city centric tour was fascinating. China is about cultural and economic development and its long history. Make sure you read some Chinese history before you go. It will enhance your experience. It was noted in previous reviews to bring a travel sheet for the train. It’s not necessary. Instead bring very comfortable shoes. I would highly recommend this tour, especially if you can get Leon as your guide.

The tour was absolutely incredible. Every day the hiking was so different and the wall incredible. The food was excellent. Accommodation is basic but that is all part of the experience.
