Itinerary
- Day 1
Nepal to Kerung
Start early in the morning for a scenic drive through the Nepalese countryside heading toward the Nepal-Tibet border at Kerung. You'll handle border formalities at both Nepali and Chinese immigration checkpoints, which takes some time but is straightforward with proper documentation. From there, continue on to Kerung Town for your overnight stay. The drive offers good views of the landscape as you transition from Nepal into Tibet.

Rongbuk
After breakfast, drive to Rongbuk and head to the historic Rongbuk Monastery. From the monastery, you'll hike to Everest Base Camp, which gives you views of the mountain and the surrounding area. The hike takes several hours depending on your pace and how far you want to go. You'll spend the night in Rongbuk, so there's time to rest after a fairly demanding day of hiking.

Rongbuk to Shigatse
Following breakfast, drive toward Shigatse. If time allows during the journey, you can stop at Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, the seat of the Panchen Lama and the largest monastery in this region of western Tibet. The monastery has religious and historical significance, and wandering through it gives insight into Tibetan Buddhist culture. You'll have your overnight accommodation in Shigatse.

Shigatse to Lhasa
After breakfast, head to Lhasa by driving via Gyantse, Yamdrok-Tso Lake, and passing by the Brahmaputra River (Yarlung Tsangpo). The route takes you through different landscapes and passes some important geographical features of the Tibetan Plateau. You'll arrive in Lhasa for your overnight stay at a hotel in the city.

Lhasa
Spend your day seeing Lhasa's most important sites. Start at Jokhang Temple, the spiritual center of Tibet with its architecture and detailed interior carvings. Then walk through Barkhor Bazaar, the busy marketplace encircling the temple where locals shop and pilgrims visit. In the afternoon, head to Potala Palace, the former seat of Tibetan government. You'll go through its many halls, chapels, and galleries that contain historical treasures and artifacts from Tibetan history.

Lhasa
Visit two major monasteries: Drepung Monastery and Sera Monastery. At Drepung, you'll observe monks going about their daily routines and learn about the monastery's long history and cultural role in Tibetan Buddhism. At Sera Monastery, you can see the philosophical debates between monks, which is a significant part of Tibetan Buddhist education and practice. Return to your hotel in Lhasa for the night.

Landmarks/POIs Drepung Monastery Sera Monastery - Day 7
Lhasa to Shegar
Drive through the Tibetan Plateau crossing over rugged mountain passes, across open grasslands, and through valleys. You'll pass through varied terrain dotted with snow-capped peaks, lakes, and scattered monasteries. The landscapes change throughout the day, showing different sides of Tibet's geography. By the end of the drive, you'll reach Shegar, which sits at a higher elevation and offers panoramic views of surrounding mountain ranges and open terrain.
Landmarks/POIs Tibetan Plateau - Day 8
Shegar to Kathmandu
After breakfast, drive through the Tibetan countryside and head back toward the Kerung Border. You'll handle border formalities to exit Tibet and return to Nepal. Then continue toward Kathmandu, taking in views of hills and mountains as you descend from the plateau. The landscape shifts from high Tibetan terrain to the greener hills of Nepal. Once you reach Kathmandu, go to your accommodation to settle in and rest after the journey.
