Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Adelaide to Mt Gambier

Your hotel pickup gets you into the Adelaide Hills where you'll walk around Hahndorf, a traditional German town with character and local shops. From there, head up to Mt Lofty Summit for those sweeping views across the region. After that, you'll drive through grain and stock lands heading south to Keith for lunch. Later in the afternoon, the route takes you through the Padthaway wine region and then to Naracoorte Caves where guides explain the Mega Fauna fossils found there. Before reaching Mt Gambier for the evening, you'll stop in the Coonawarra wine region for some local wine tastings. It's a full day covering a lot of ground, so by the time you arrive at your accommodation in Mt Gambier, you'll have seen quite a variety of South Australia's landscapes.

Tower Hill Reserve is your next stop where wildlife spotting includes Emus, Koalas, Kangaroos, and Echidnas if you're lucky with timing. You'll drive through Warrnambool and Allansford passing through dairy country before reaching the Great Ocean Road section. From there, walk around and photograph the Bay of Martyrs, Bay of Islands, London Bridge, and Loch Ard Gorge, learning about the shipwreck history from the 1800s. Then comes the Twelve Apostles, those limestone stacks that you'll want to photograph from different angles. Your villa accommodation overlooks the Southern Ocean, so you'll have those views right from where you're staying for the evening.

We had the best time, Pierre showed us everything and changed the tour to suit us as we were the only people on the tour. Saw things we didn't expect like caves and dinosaur bones. the beach views were wonderful. The food and hotels were very comfortable.

The itinerary was good and very well organized. The hotels were amazing and places I doubt we would have found had we travelled on our own. Dinner and breakfasts were excellent and I liked we had the option of finding our own places for lunch. The scenic stops were very interesting (caves!)

The itinerary was wonderful, the guide (Pierre) was excellent, and the overall organization was great. The length of the drive was the biggest obstacle, but the well-timed comfort breaks and interesting stops mitigated that. The interesting stops included a wine tasting in the famous Coonawarra wine region, a tour of the Naracoorte Caves (UNESCO World Hertiage Site), a hike in the rain forest, and, of course, the Great Ocean Road & its iconic limestone stacks. The accommodations and the dinners were excellent. One hotel located above Appollo Bay had spectacular breath-taking views from the rooms. Overall, a trip to be remembered.
