We were greeted by our friendly driver, Jamal at Marrakech airport. Once we were settled in the Toyota, off we went for our several day adventure. We were a small group of 4 friends on a new adventure and we bonded with Jamal as if he were part of our group. He was easy going, friendly, thoughtful, has an infectious smile and laugh. He was the perfect driver for our small group. I am glad we spent as much time with him as we did. He was always professional and we enjoyed learning about his culture. Driving in the cities seems stressful with their multi lane round-abouts and the seeming disorganized nature of right of way laws. Jamal handled all of this with ease. I dont always feel safe when other people are driving. Jamal was a good driver, he was not impatient or aggressive. It was very comfortable trip and you could tell Jamal was comfortable in the vehicle. Jamal made the multi day trip fun and knew a lot about the history of each place we were at. I understand that each city has their own rules about who can be a guide and who can be a driver but it would have been better if Jamal could have been both for us. The way the tour was billed it eluded to Jamal being our guide as well but that was not the case. Many times he would be required to drop us off near our riad and pick us up the next morning, often we would be required to find a different guide for us. There were a few weird incidents that wouldn't have happened if he could have been both our driver and our guide. I also wish he knew a little bit more about the history of some of the locations we were at. He did know a lot of the history of the sites we stopped at, however it is obvious he was a driver and not a guide. I was hoping we would get a little more information about the moorish history in area but I don't think that was part of his training. With a small group like ours, it is only natural that you bond with someone when you spend several hours together, over several days in a vehicle. We had a great time, we covered a LOT of ground in short amount of time. I enjoyed the difference between the desert and the Atlas mountains, as well as the difference in towns and cities along the way. We did not see everything but we did get a good overview. My birthday happened to fall during our trip and Jamal was thoughtful in how he acknowledged it. I would definitely work with Authentic Sahara tours in the future, even though I do wish that our drivers were also guides.
