Antananarivo
You'll arrive in Antananarivo and get settled at your hotel. Spend the rest of the day walking around the upper town to see the historic palaces and streets that reflect the city's role as Madagascar's cultural and political heart. The architecture and squares give you a real sense of the place's history.

Landmarks Antananarivo - Day 2
Antananarivo to Miandrivazo
An early start takes you west through the countryside for a long drive. You'll pass rice fields and small villages before stopping in Ambatolampy to watch craftspeople make traditional aluminum cooking pots. After lunch in Antsirabe, the landscape changes as you head into the mid-west region with fewer settlements. You'll reach Miandrivazo by evening (75°F/24°C).

Tsiribihina River Descent
Morning transfer to Masiakampy, then you'll board a dhow for the river journey down the Tsiribihina. The route takes you past tobacco plantations with chances to spot birds, waterfalls, and natural pools. Keep an eye out for lemurs, kingfishers, bats, and crocodiles along the way. You'll camp on the rivershore after a full day on the water.

Tsiribihina River
A slower day on the river while the crew handles meals. You can wander around the boat, play cards, read, or relax on the solarium roof and take in the scenery. By evening, villagers often come by to share traditional music and dancing. Another night camping riverside (70°F/21°C).

Landmarks River Tsiribihina - Day 5
Bemaharaha Tsingy National Park
After breakfast, you'll continue downriver to Belo for lunch. Then a rough vehicle track takes you roughly half a day to reach Bemaharaha Tsingy National Park, about 100 kilometers away. You'll cross the Manambolo River to get to Bekopaka village where you'll stay for the night.

- Day 6
Bemaharaha Tsingy National Park
Morning descent of the Manambolo gorges by traditional pirogue, followed by a picnic lunch. In the afternoon, you'll visit the small Tsingys and caves in the area. These jagged limestone formations get their name from the Malagasy word meaning 'walking on the feet tips' because of their sharp shapes. Sifaka and Gidro lemurs live here, along with specialized plants like pachypodiums adapted to the dry climate.

Grand Tsingy
You'll head to the Grand Tsingy, one of Madagascar's most striking natural sites. This limestone landscape formed over millions of years with dramatic fault lines and razor-sharp rock formations. A local guide will take you through, and you can adjust the walking difficulty to match your group's ability. Six lemur species, 53 bird types, reptiles, and the tiny Brookesia Perarmata chameleon live here. Picnic lunch included (68°F/20°C).

You'll return toward Morondava by retracing your route, crossing both rivers by car ferry (this takes time). After lunch in Belo, you'll continue to Kirindy Reserve just beyond. This dry forest has the highest concentration of lemur species on the island and stays active day and night for spotting nocturnal animals.

Kirindy Reserve to Morondava
Walk through the forest with a local guide to see the wildlife and vegetation. You might spot the Fosa, Madagascar's largest meat-eating animal. Before reaching Morondava, you'll pass through the famous Allée des Baobabs at sunset when the golden light bounces off the smooth tree trunks. It's the best time to photograph these iconic trees (78°F/26°C).
