Itinerary
- Day 1
Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp
You'll start with a 50-minute drive to Machame Gate for registration, then transfer through villages and plantations heading toward Umbwe Gate. The trek begins on a forestry track that winds through dense rainforest, ascending sharply along a ridge between two rivers. By afternoon you'll reach Umbwe Camp, located in the forest where you'll settle in for your first night at around 5,000 ft elevation.

Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp
Hiking continues through rockier terrain with sparse undergrowth and moss-covered trees as you gain elevation. You'll get your first good looks at Kilimanjaro rising ahead. The path flattens as you approach Barranco Valley, then you descend through the unique Senecio Forest before reaching Barranco Camp. It's a good day to start adjusting to the altitude while covering solid ground.

Landmarks Barranco Valley - Day 3
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
This day starts with a descent into a ravine leading to the base of the Great Barranco Wall, then you're climbing the steep 900 ft cliff face. After that you'll cross a series of hills and valleys, descending into Karanga Valley before climbing to Karanga Camp. It's a shorter day that focuses on acclimatization, giving your body time to adjust to the higher elevation around 13,400 ft.

- Day 4
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Leaving Karanga Camp, you'll reach the junction connecting with the Mweka Trail and continue climbing through rocky sections to Barafu Hut. This completes the Southern Circuit with views of the summit appearing from multiple angles as you approach. You'll rest and have an early dinner at camp, taking time to look at the two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo since tomorrow's the big push to the summit.

- Day 5
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
You'll depart around midnight for the hardest part of the trek. Ascending in darkness for several hours with frequent breaks, you'll battle extreme wind and cold conditions. Near Stella Point at 18,900 ft, a magnificent sunrise breaks over Mawenzi Peak before you reach Uhuru Peak, Africa's highest point. Same day you descend to Mweka Camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch. Rocky terrain can be tough on your knees, so take it steady on the way down.

- Day 6
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
The final descent goes from Mweka Camp down to Mweka Gate where you'll collect your summit certificate. At lower elevations expect wet and muddy conditions underfoot. After that you'll continue another hour to Mweka Village where a vehicle will be waiting to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi, ending your trek.
