First stop is Wat Phra That Chedi Luang with its distinctive bell shape, then you'll make your way to Wat Phra That Chom Kitti on the hilltop (there are 350 steps to climb, so pace yourself). From there, head to the Golden Triangle where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar's borders meet. A boat trip takes you to Don Sao Island in Laos for some time to walk around. Back on the Thai side, you'll grab lunch at a local restaurant before visiting the Opium Museum. Later you'll check into your hotel and settle in for the night.

  2. Day 2

    Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai

Starting at 07:30 after breakfast, your guide meets you for the drive to Chiang Mai. You'll begin with a short boat ride on the Kok River, then visit a Karen tribe village where you can see elephants up close. Next comes the White Temple, which is quite striking, and then a stop at the thermal springs to relax for a bit. Lunch happens at a local restaurant around midday. Afterward, you head up to Doi Suthep Temple perched on a hillside near the city. You'll return to your hotel to check in, and then the evening is yours to spend however you'd like, though dinner is on your own.

    Elephant Sanctuary

You'll meet the park ranger at 06:45 and start the roughly ninety-minute drive through the Thai jungle to reach the Elephant Sanctuary near Chiang Mai. Once there, you'll change into traditional northern Thai clothing. The Mahouts (elephant caretakers) will teach you about the animals and how to prepare their food and medicinal remedies. After that comes the hands-on part: you'll bathe the elephants, enjoy some fruit, and then walk with them into the forest down to the river where you can play and bathe alongside them in the mud. You'll be back in the city around 12:30, leaving your afternoon and evening open to do as you please.

Our tour guide was nice but apparently there was no communication between him and the people doing the planning. he did not know which hotel we were staying at (I had to tell him) and he did not know we were doing the elephants the next day. however he was very nice. There just needs to be better inter-office communication
