Passau
You'll arrive at your riverfront hotel in Passau and get settled in. After dropping off your bags, head into the old town for dinner. The center has plenty of restaurants and the cobblestone streets are worth a walk even if you're just grabbing a bite before turning in early.

- Day 2
Passau to Schlögen
Get your bike and safety briefing in the morning, then pedal east toward Obernzell. There's a pottery museum housed in a riverside castle that's worth checking out. From there, cycle through oak woodlands and cross into Austria. Your hotel for the night has a pool and terrace overlooking the Danube, so you can unwind with river views after riding.

Schlögen to Linz
Start early through the Donauschlinge Nature Reserve where you might spot kingfishers if you're lucky. Continue on to Aschach, which has frescoed buildings along the waterfront. Later you can either catch the ferry to Linz or take a scenic route through reed marshes to Ottensheim beach, then hop on the train to Linz. Your hotel sits in a converted convent right in the town square.

Linz to Ardagger
Ride out to Enns this morning, Austria's oldest city with roots back to the 12th century, then return to the river for a more relaxed afternoon. The route to Ardagger is scenic and straightforward, and this charming village makes for a nice spot to spend the evening without too much exertion.

- Day 5
Ardagger to Melk
See the baroque architecture in Grein before heading into the Danube Valley. Grab lunch in Ybbs, which has an odd but fun penny-farthing bicycle collection if you want to check it out. Ride past Maria Taferl with its twin hilltop towers, then arrive at your family-run hotel situated right below Melk's impressive monastery.

Melk
Take time to walk through Melk's Benedictine monastery, rebuilt back in 1683 and still quite grand. The rooftop terrace has nice views over the countryside. If you're up for another bike ride, Schloss Schallaburg is nearby, a Renaissance castle with rose gardens and cultural shows, or you can stay put and relax at the hotel.

Melk to Krems
Ride through the UNESCO Wachau Valley today with its villages, vineyards, and churches dotting the landscape. Pass through Durnstein, where Richard the Lionheart was supposedly held ransom in a castle perched on the hill above town. Roll into Krems by afternoon for a swim in the pool and dinner on the terrace with valley views.

- Day 8
Krems
Spend the day in Krems exploring the old town center. The Wine Museum is inside a restored Dominican monastery and worth an hour or two. There's also a 13th century abbey with paintings by Martin Johann Schmidt if religious art interests you. Alternatively, cycle to Schloss Grafenegg with its 85 acres of grounds, or just relax at the hotel spa and pool.

Krems to Tulln

Tulln to Vienna
