Itinerary
- Day 1
Thimphu
You'll arrive in Thimphu and get settled into this charming Himalayan capital. Start by heading up to the Buddha Dordenma Statue, which gives you great views across the city. From there, you can walk to the Memorial Chorten where you'll see locals going around it as part of their prayers. The Tashichho Dzong is next on your list, and it's worth spending time looking at the architecture. If it's the weekend, the Farmer's Market is worth checking out for local organic produce and to see how the community shops. By evening, just wander around the city streets and markets at your own pace to get a feel for how Thimphu actually works day to day.

Thimphu to Punakha
You'll start early heading to Dochula Pass where you can take in views of the eastern Himalayan ranges if the weather cooperates. Then it's a drive to Wangdue before starting a 1.5-hour hike through Metshina village up to Chimi Lhakhang, a fertility temple with a pretty interesting history. After that hike, you're heading to Punakha Dzong, which sits between two rivers and is worth taking your time to explore. There's a 200m suspension bridge crossing the Phochu River that takes you over to Gidagom village. The evening is left open so you can rest up or wander around at your own pace.

Punakha to Paro
The drive to Paro includes another stop at Dochula Pass if weather allows it. After you check into your hotel, you'll get into Paro's main sights, starting with Ta Dzong, an old watch tower that now functions as a museum. Then you can see Rinpung Dzong, a fortress that's pretty impressive, and Kichu Lhakhang, which dates back to 629 AD so it's one of the oldest temples around. Later in the afternoon, there's a local archery match happening at the national stadium where you can watch. Paro
Today is all about the hike up to Taktsang Monastery, the iconic monastery that sits 900m above Paro Valley. The steep forested trail takes roughly 4 to 5 hours round trip, so plan on a full day. You'll stop for lunch at a hillside cafe that has close views of the monastery, which makes the meal pretty special. Later in the evening, you're heading to a village home for an authentic Bhutanese farewell dinner where you'll try local liquor and food. If you're interested, there's also the option of experiencing a traditional hot stone bath with medicinal herbs to help your muscles recover from the hike.
